What Was Ibrahim’s Vision About His Son Ismael?
Ibrahim longed for a child for a long time, and he prayed to Allah to bless him with a son, “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous” (Surah As-Saffat 37:100). So Allah blessed him with Ismael, and He Almighty commanded that he leave his son in an uncultivated land. Then when his son grew up a little, “then when the boy reached the age to work with him” (Surah As-Saffat 37:102), Allah commanded him through a dream to slaughter his son. Prophets’ dreams are a form of revelation, so he took his son and set out to slaughter him. Allah sent down a sacrifice to slaughter instead, and it became a divine tradition for all nations to offer sacrifices for Allah. “For every community We appointed a rite of sacrifice so that they may pronounce the Name of Allah over the sacrificial animals He has provided for them” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:34). What we learn from the story of Ibrahim is that he did not argue or complain about the orders he received from Allah, and although the orders were difficult, he submitted and complied immediately, because he had strong faith and trust in Allah, and he knew that when Allah commands something, it is either to test one’s patience and faith or to raise one’s rank and reward.
1. Why a Prophet’s Dream Carries the Weight of Revelation |
For an ordinary person, a dream about harming one’s own child would never be treated as a binding command. But the dreams of Prophets are established in Islamic belief as a genuine channel of revelation, which is exactly why Ibrahim moved to act on it rather than dismissing it, and why the episode is treated in the Quran as a real test of obedience rather than a metaphor.
2. A Long-Awaited Son and the Hardest Possible Test |
Ibrahim had waited years for a child before Allah granted him Ismael, which makes the command to sacrifice him especially severe as a test. Scholars point to this sequence, the long wait, the joy of the birth, and then the command, as evidence that the trial was designed to test the deepest possible attachment, not a minor or easy matter.
3. The Origin of the Sacrifice Practiced by Every Nation |
Surah Al-Hajj 22:34 states that Allah appointed a rite of sacrifice for every community, not only for the followers of Ibrahim. This links the ransom that saved Ismael directly to Udhiyah (the sacrifice offered during Eid al-Adha) still performed by Muslims today, connecting a single family’s trial to a ritual observed by an entire ummah.
4. What Ismael Himself Said When Told |
This account focuses on Ibrahim’s own vision and his submission to it. Ismael’s own words when his father told him of the dream, and how he responded, are covered in full detail with the complete Quranic dialogue in What Was Ismael’s Reaction to His Father’s Vision to Slaughter Him?
Scholarly Insight: Surah As-Saffat 37:100-107 and Surah Al-Hajj 22:34 together record Ibrahim’s vision to sacrifice his son and the sacrifice Allah sent down in his place, establishing the sacrifice practiced by every nation since. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah As-Saffat.
