Surah At-Tawbah is most commonly known as Surah Bara’at (The Ultimatum or Dissociation). It is also referred to by scholars as Al-Fadihah (The Exposer) because it revealed the hidden intentions of the hypocrites.
تُسمى سورة التوبة أيضاً بـ "سورة براءة"، ومن أسمائها المشهورة عند العلماء "الفاضحة" لأنها كشفت أسرار المنافقين وأظهرت حقيقتهم.
The primary alternative name, Bara’at, comes from the very first word of the Surah. It signifies a declaration of freedom from obligation or a formal dissociation from those who broke their treaties.
Scholarly Insight: Some companions, such as Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (ra), noted that the Surah was so effective at exposing the hypocrites that people feared no one would be left unmentioned. This is why "Al-Fadihah" remains one of its most significant descriptive names.
