What is the penalty for the one who is oblivious of Allah’s Remembrance?
The Quran details the frightening penalties for abandoning the remembrance of the Creator, proving that the human heart cannot survive without it.
The Consequences of Heedlessness |
1. A Life of Distress and Blindness
Allah has made one's obliviousness of Allah a cause for the most tremendous loss to man, and his living a life of distress. (But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life, then We will raise them up blind on the Day of Judgment.” They will cry, “My Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, although I used to see?” Allah will respond, “It is so, just as Our revelations came to you and you neglected them, so Today you are neglected.”) Taha 20: 124 to 126.
2. The Distraction of Worldly Blessings
(O believers! Do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. For whoever does so, it is they who are the ˹true˺ losers.) Al-Munafiqun 63: 9. (This verse highlights that the very blessings Allah bestows can become a source of absolute ruin if they distract the heart from its primary purpose, which is the constant remembrance of the Giver).
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic exegesis (Tafsir), the "miserable life" (Ma'ishatan Dankan) mentioned in Surah Taha is not necessarily a lack of material wealth, but rather a severe constriction of the heart. Scholars like Ibn Kathir explain that the heedless person's heart remains anxious, perpetually unsatisfied, and filled with a void that no amount of worldly possessions can fill. The punishment of blindness on the Day of Judgment is a form of poetic and terrifying divine justice: just as the person deliberately chose to be "blind" to the signs and remembrance of Allah in the worldly life, they are resurrected literally blind and utterly neglected by Allah in the Hereafter.
Frequently Asked Questions |
What does the Quran mean by a "miserable life"?
A "miserable life" refers to a spiritual and psychological state of distress, anxiety, and a constricted heart. Even if a heedless person is materially wealthy, they are deprived of true inner peace and contentment.
Why will the heedless be raised blind on the Day of Judgment?
They are raised blind as a direct consequence of their actions in this world. Because they chose to be "blind" to Allah's signs and neglected His remembrance during their lives, they are resurrected without sight and are ignored by Allah on the Day of Judgment.
Can wealth and family lead to this penalty?
Yes, if they become distractions. Surah Al-Munafiqun warns believers not to let their wealth or children completely divert them from remembering Allah, as doing so leads to becoming one of the true losers.
