What is the meaning of a good word?
Ibn Othamin divides the good word into two kinds: a word good in itself, such as saying there is no god but Allah and reciting the Quran, and a word good in its purpose, such as permissible talk that puts people at ease and brings them joy.
Islamic scholars explain that goodness in speech is not limited strictly to religious rituals. Any word spoken with the sincere intention to uplift another person is highly valued and rewarded by Allah.
The Two Divisions of a Good Word
Ibn Othamin may Allah have mercy on him said in his explanation of Riyadh al Saliheen that the good word is divided into two parts:
1. Good in Itself (Spiritual Remembrance)
The first part is speech that is inherently good in itself, such as Al Thikr. This includes saying: there is no god but Allah, Allah is great, all thanks to Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah. The best form of Thikr is reading the Quran.
2. Good in Its Purpose (Social Interaction)
The second part is the word that is good in its purpose: any permissible word, such as talking with people when you intend by it to put them at ease and bring them joy.

Allah Almighty says: (To Him alone good words ascend) Surah Fatir 35: 10.

يقسم ابن عثيمين الكلمة الطيبة قسمين: كلمة طيبة بذاتها كقول لا إله إلا الله وقراءة القرآن، وكلمة طيبة في غايتها كالكلام المباح الذي يؤنس الناس ويدخل السرور عليهم.
يوضح علماء الإسلام أن طيب الكلام لا يقتصر فقط على الشعائر الدينية الصرفة. بل إن أي كلمة تقال بنية صادقة للترويح عن إنسان آخر لها قيمة عظيمة ويؤجر عليها المسلم عند الله.
قسما الكلمة الطيبة
قال ابن عثيمين رحمه الله في شرح رياض الصالحين: الكلمة الطيبة تنقسم إلى قسمين:
1. طيبة بذاتها (الذكر)
طيبة بذاتها كالذكر: لا إله إلا الله، الله أكبر، الحمد لله، لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله، وأفضل الذكر قراءة القرآن.
2. طيبة في غايتها (التفاعل الاجتماعي)
وأما الكلمة الطيبة في غايتها: فهي الكلمة المباحة، كالتحدث مع الناس إذا قصدت بهذا إيناسهم وإدخال السرور عليهم.
رفعة الكلم الطيب في القرآن
قال الله تعالى: (إِلَيْهِ يَصْعَدُ الْكَلِمُ الطَّيِّبُ) فاطر 35: 10.
1. Good in Purpose: A Cheerful Face | الطيب في الغاية: البشاشة
The Prophet said: Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face (Sahih Muslim 2626), and: Your smile in the face of your brother is charity (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1956, graded hasan gharib by al-Tirmidhi). Friendly words and a cheerful face that put people at ease are what Ibn Othamin calls good in their purpose.
وَقُل لِّعِبَادِي يَقُولُوا الَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ (سورة الإسراء: 53)
قال النبي ﷺ: "لا تحقرن من المعروف شيئا ولو أن تلقى أخاك بوجه طلق" (صحيح مسلم 2626)، وقال: "تبسمك في وجه أخيك لك صدقة" (جامع الترمذي 1956، وقال: حسن غريب). والكلام الودود والوجه البشوش الذي يؤنس الناس هو ما سماه ابن عثيمين طيبا في غايته.
2. Gentleness in Speech | الرفق في القول
When some people greeted the Prophet with a curse disguised as a greeting, Aisha answered them harshly. He said: O Aisha, Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in all matters, and he had replied to them only with: and upon you (Sahih al-Bukhari 6927). Allah commands: speak to people good words (Al-Baqarah 2:83).
وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا (سورة البقرة: 83)
لما سلم رهط على النبي ﷺ بالدعاء عليه، ردت عليهم عائشة بشدة، فقال: "يا عائشة إن الله رفيق يحب الرفق في الأمر كله"، وكان قد رد عليهم بقوله: "وعليكم" (صحيح البخاري 6927). وأمر الله تعالى بحسن القول للناس (البقرة 2:83).
3. The Best Remembrance: Reciting the Quran | أفضل الذكر قراءة القرآن
The answer names reciting the Quran as the best remembrance. The Prophet said that whoever reads a letter of the Book of Allah has a good deed for it, and each good deed is multiplied ten times (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2910), and that the best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027).
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنفَقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ سِرًّا وَعَلَانِيَةً يَرْجُونَ تِجَارَةً لَّن تَبُورَ (سورة فاطر: 29)
