What does "their hearts have been stained" mean?
The heart is considered the spiritual center of a human being in Islam. It is the vessel that receives divine light and guidance. However, human actions have a direct physical and spiritual impact on this vessel, determining whether it remains pure or becomes corrupted over time.
1. The Accumulation of Sins |
It means that because of all the evil people have committed, a layer of stains has covered their hearts. As a direct result of the continuous accumulation of their sins without seeking forgiveness, this dark barrier forms, blocking out any light or truth from entering.
2. Spiritual Blindness |
Once this layer hardens, Allah Almighty has made their hearts become blind, resulting in their complete loss of feelings. The person becomes spiritually numb, unable to distinguish between right and wrong, and feels no guilt when committing further evil.
3. The Quranic Warning |
Allah Almighty explicitly warns against this dangerous spiritual condition in the Quran, confirming that evil deeds are the root cause of this heart stain.
Allah says: (But no! In fact, their hearts have been stained by all the evil they used to commit!) Surah Al Mutaffifin 83: 14.
Scholarly Insight: Islamic scholars refer to a profound Hadith to explain this verse. The Prophet pbuh taught that when a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on their heart. If they repent and ask for forgiveness, their heart is polished clean. But if they increase in sin, the black spots increase until they completely cover the heart. This total covering is the "Ran" (stain) mentioned in Surah Al Mutaffifin.
