What Did Allah Teach Adam That the Angels Did Not Know?
Allah Almighty created Adam, peace be upon him, and favored him above many of His creations. He gave him vast knowledge and taught him the names of all things, then He told the angels to tell Him those names. The angels did not know them. He told Adam to tell them the names, and he did.
(He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?" They replied, "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise." Allah said, "O Adam! Inform them of their names." Then when Adam did, Allah said, "Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?") (Al-Baqarah 2:31-33)
1. The Angels' Honest Admission of Limits |
What stands out in the angels' reply is not failure but honesty: "We have no knowledge except what You have taught us." Rather than guessing or claiming knowledge they lacked, they immediately traced all knowledge back to Allah as its only source, a model of intellectual humility built into this exchange between the angels and their Lord over Adam. Why scholars describe the angels as protected from sin is explained in what it means that the angels are infallible.
2. Knowledge as the Basis for Honor |
Ibn Kathir describes this passage as the place where Allah shows Adam's honor over the angels through the knowledge of the names of all things that He gave him and not them: not physical strength or seniority, but knowledge Allah chose to grant him until he himself taught it to them. The angels' prostration to Adam is told in why the angels prostrated to Adam. The fuller account of what Allah taught Adam covers this same passage in more depth.
3. Which Names Adam Was Taught |
The early commentators described these names in different ways. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is reported as saying they were the names people use for things, such as person, animal, sky, earth, plain, sea, camel and donkey, and Mujahid said they were the name of every animal, every bird and everything. Al-Rabi' said the names of the angels, Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd said the names of Adam's descendants, and Ibn Jarir al-Tabari preferred these two together. Ibn Kathir judges the sound view to be that Allah taught Adam the names of all things, their essences and their actions, and supports it with the hadith of intercession in Sahih al-Bukhari (4476), in which the believers remind Adam on the Day of Resurrection that Allah taught him the names of all things.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Baqarah 2:31-33 records the full exchange between Allah, the angels, and Adam over the names of all things. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah.
