How Did Adam's Knowledge of the Names Answer the Angels' Own Question?
Allah Almighty created Adam, peace be upon him, and favored him above many of His creations. He gave him vast knowledge and taught him the names of all things, then He told the angels to tell Him those names. The angels did not know them. He told Adam to tell them the names, and he did.
(He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?" They replied, "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise." Allah said, "O Adam! Inform them of their names." Then when Adam did, Allah said, "Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?") (Al-Baqarah 2:31-33)
1. A Question Raised Before Adam Even Existed |
The verse just before this exchange records the angels asking about the wisdom of Allah's plan: "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise?" (Al-Baqarah 2:30). Allah's reply was brief and left everything to be demonstrated: "Indeed, I know that which you do not know." Ibn Kathir explains that this was not an objection or envy on the angels' part, but a question seeking to learn the wisdom behind it.
The Test That Proved the Point | الاختبار الذي أثبت المقصود
The naming test that follows is not a separate story but the direct proof of that earlier statement: within the same passage, the very beings who had asked about the wisdom of a human successor are shown a capacity in Adam they themselves lack. The angels' own honest admission of their limits during this test completes the answer Allah had already promised.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Baqarah 2:30-33 records the angels' question and its direct answer through Adam's knowledge of the names. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah.
Frequently Asked Questions |

They asked about the wisdom of placing a being on earth who would cause corruption and shed blood; Ibn Kathir explains it was a question, not an objection.
