What are the types of spending for Allah’s sake?
The answer lists many ways of spending for Allah's sake: places of worship and learning, care for orphans and the sick, water, food and relief for people in need, and spending in jihad in Allah's cause. Many of them are lasting charity whose benefit continues for years.
There are many ways to spend in Allah’s cause, covering every aspect of human welfare and spiritual growth in society.
Avenues of Charitable Spending
1. Educational and Religious Infrastructure
Building a masjid (mosque), building Islamic schools, and publishing Islamic books in many languages. (These forms of spending ensure the preservation and spread of beneficial knowledge and provide places of worship for generations to come).
2. Social Welfare and Healthcare
Sponsoring orphans and building medical centers for the poor. (Caring for orphans and the sick protects the most vulnerable members of society, and the Prophet promised the guardian of an orphan a place close to him in Paradise.)
3. Essential Relief and Provisions
Supplying drinking water, feeding the one who is fasting, and helping people in general relief efforts. (Providing life sustaining necessities like clean water and food directly addresses immediate human suffering).
4. Defense and Protection
Fighting in Allah’s cause. (This covers spending to equip those who strive in Allah's cause and to support their families.)
1. Building Mosques and Spreading Knowledge |
The Prophet said that whoever builds a mosque seeking Allah's pleasure, Allah builds for him the like of it in Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 450; Sahih Muslim 533). He also named beneficial knowledge among the three things whose reward continues after death (Sahih Muslim 1631). Funding schools, teachers, and Islamic books in many languages joins both rewards, because people keep praying and learning long after the donor has gone.
2. Orphans and the Sick |
The Prophet said that he and the one who looks after an orphan will be in Paradise like this, holding up his index and middle fingers (Sahih al-Bukhari 5304). He also said that whoever relieves a believer of one of the hardships of this world, Allah will relieve him of one of the hardships of the Day of Resurrection (Sahih Muslim 2699). A clinic for people who cannot afford treatment relieves exactly such hardship, and the Quran praises those who feed the poor, the orphan, and the captive purely for Allah's sake (Al-Insan 76:8-9).
3. Water, Food, and Relief |
Sa'd ibn Ubadah asked the Prophet which charity was best to give for his late mother, and he answered: water. Sa'd then dug a well and dedicated it to her (Sunan Abi Dawud 1681, graded hasan by al-Albani). The Prophet also said that whoever gives a fasting person food to break the fast earns a reward like his, without the fasting person's reward being reduced at all (Jami at-Tirmidhi 807, graded sahih by al-Albani). The Quran counts feeding people on a day of hunger among the deeds that carry a person over the steep path (Al-Balad 90:11-16).
4. Spending in Jihad in Allah's Cause |
Allah commands believers to spend in His cause and not to throw themselves into destruction (Al-Baqarah 2:195). Abu Ayyub al-Ansari explained that the destruction meant here was staying with one's wealth, tending it, and abandoning jihad (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2972, graded sahih by al-Albani). The Prophet said that whoever equips a fighter in Allah's cause has taken part in the fighting, and whoever looks after a fighter's family well in his absence has taken part as well (Sahih al-Bukhari 2843).
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Jurisprudence ( Fiqh ), voluntary spending is often categorized by its longevity. Many of the acts mentioned here, such as building mosques, establishing schools, and digging water wells, fall under the category of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them (Sahih Muslim 1631). Investing wealth in lasting communal works therefore lets the donor hope for continuing reward long after their passing, every time a person prays in that mosque, drinks from that well, or learns from that school.
