Who Was the First Person to Believe in the Prophet (PBUH)?
1 The wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the mother of the believers, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, may Allah be pleased with her, was the first among the women to embrace Islam.
2. The first among the freedmen (mawali) to embrace Islam was Zayd ibn Harithah ibn Sharhabil al-Kalbi, who had been a young slave owned by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
3. The first of the boys to embrace Islam was his cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib - and he was sponsored by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
4. The first of the men to embrace Islam was his close and great friend Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and the narrators of the Seerah mention that the aforementioned people converted on the first day of the call.
5 . After that, Abu Bakr was active in the call to Islam, and he was a man who was well known and liked with a very pleasant character, and he called those close to him, so those who accepted his call and embraced Islam were: Uthman ibn Affan al-Umayyad, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam al-Asadi, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (both of Banu Zuhrah), and Talhah ibn Ubaydullah al-Taymi. These eight who preceded the people were the first generation and the vanguard of Islam.
6. One of the first Muslims was Bilal ibn Rabah al-Habshi.
7. Among the people who followed the aforementioned and therefore were pioneers: the Trustee of this Ummah Abu Ubaydah Amer ibn al-Jarrah of Bani al-Harith ibn Fihr, Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Asad and al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam (both of Banu Makhzum), Uthman ibn Maz’un and his brothers Qudamah and Abdullah, Ubaydah ibn al-Harith ibn al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf, Sa’id ibn Zaid al-Adawi, his wife Fatima bint al-Khattab al-Adawiya, sister of Omar ibn al-Khattab, Khabab ibn al-Art, Abdullah ibn Mas’ud al-Hudhali, and others; these are the first forerunners, from all the clans of Quraysh.
8. These had secretly embraced Islam, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) met with them secretly and guided them to religion because the call was still at its beginning and it was undisclosed and involved individuals, and the revelation had become uninterrupted after the revelation of the beginning Ayat of Mudathir.
1. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid: The First Believer |
Ibn Kathir writes that Khadijah was the first of the women to accept Islam, and that the reports suggest she was the first of all, some saying even before the men. When the Prophet ﷺ came back from Hira afraid for himself, she told him: "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3).
2. Abu Bakr as-Siddiq: The Foremost Among Free Adult Men | أبو بكر الصديق: رائد السابقين من الرجال الأحرار
Ibn Kathir names Abu Bakr the first of the free men to accept Islam. Ibn Ishaq reports the Prophet ﷺ saying: "I never invited anyone to Islam but he hesitated, paused and considered, except Abu Bakr; he did not hold back when I mentioned it to him, nor did he hesitate." Abu Bakr then called those close to him, and Uthman ibn Affan, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and Talhah ibn Ubaydullah (may Allah be pleased with them) accepted Islam through him, as the scholar's answer lists. Ibn Kathir, on 9:100, calls Abu Bakr the master of the Companions after the Messenger among the foremost with whom Allah is pleased.
3. Ali ibn Abi Talib: The Pioneer Among Youth and Children |
Ibn Ishaq reports that Ali, then about ten, was living in the Prophet's care: in a year of hardship the Prophet ﷺ had taken him in to ease the burden on Abu Talib, who had many dependents. Ali came upon the Prophet ﷺ and Khadijah praying; he said he would decide nothing until he had spoken to Abu Talib, then the next morning he came back and accepted Islam.
4. Zayd ibn Harithah and Bilal ibn Rabah |
Ibn Kathir counts Zayd ibn Harithah, the Prophet's freedman, the first of the freedmen to accept Islam. Bilal was among the first to declare Islam openly: Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the polytheists seized the others, put iron armour on them and left them in the scorching sun, and every one of them gave in to what the polytheists wanted except Bilal, whose own life meant little to him for the sake of Allah; when his people handed him to boys who dragged him through the valleys of Mecca, he kept saying: "One, One" (Sunan Ibn Majah 150, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani).
Scholarly Insight: The Prophet ﷺ said when defending Abu Bakr before the companions (Sahih al-Bukhari 3661): “Allah sent me to you, and you said, "You are lying," while Abu Bakr said, "He has spoken the truth." He supported me with his person and his wealth. Will you then leave my companion to me?” See the beginning of the call to Islam. Read more in the tafsir of Surah At-Tawbah.
