The Quran explicitly commands believers to avoid speaking ill of one another. Understanding the exact definitions of these destructive habits is the first step toward purifying the tongue and protecting the honor of others.
The Three Forbidden Forms of Speech |
1. Backbiting (Gheebah)
Backbiting means that one talks about a Muslim in his absence about anything he does not like to reveal or mention. It involves speaking the truth about someone's flaws behind their back.
2. Slander (Buhtan)
Slander is talking about a Muslim of what is not in him, which is lying. This means fabricating false accusations against a person.
3. Gossip (Namimah)
Gossip is the transfer of speech from one end to another to try and cause rivalry between people. It focuses on spreading private matters specifically to create hatred and conflict.
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Jurisprudence, the Prophet Muhammad pbuh clarified these boundaries perfectly. He once asked his companions if they knew what backbiting was. When they replied that Allah and His Messenger know best, he said: "Saying something about your brother that he dislikes." A man asked: "What if what I say about my brother is true?" The Prophet replied: "If what you say about him is true, you have backbitten him. And if it is not true, you have slandered him." Gossip, on the other hand, is considered so destructive to community bonds that the Prophet pbuh strictly warned that a person who spreads gossip will not enter Paradise.
