Is it only humans who prostrate themselves (perform sajood) before Allah?
Everything in this Universe prostrates to Allah the Almighty: the trees, animals, birds, mountains, and angels. This universal submission highlights the absolute majesty of the Creator.
The Universal Prostration |
1. The Humility of Creation
(Have they not considered how the shadows of everything Allah has created incline to the right and the left as the sun moves, totally submitting to Allah in all humility? And to Allah alone bows down in submission whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of living creatures, as do the angels: who are not too proud to do so.) [An-Nahl 16: 48-49]
2. The Prostration of All Beings
(Do you not see that to Allah bow down in submission all those in the heavens and all those on the earth, as well as the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and all living beings, as well as many humans) [Al-Hajj 22: 18]
Scholarly Insight: Islamic scholars distinguish between two types of prostration in the Holy Quran. The first is "Sajud al-Inqiyad," which is the involuntary submission of all physical laws and celestial bodies to Allah's command. This is why mountains, stars, and shadows are described as prostrating. The second is "Sajud al-Ikhtiyar," which is the voluntary act of worship performed by humans and jinns. While all of creation is in a constant state of submission to Allah's laws, humans are given the unique choice to align their free will with this universal harmony through intentional prayer.
Frequently Asked Questions |
Do celestial bodies like the sun and moon prostrate to Allah?
Yes, the Holy Quran explicitly states in Surah Al-Hajj that the sun: the moon: and the stars: along with everything else in the heavens and the earth: prostrate to Allah in submission.
How do inanimate objects like mountains and trees perform prostration?
Inanimate objects prostrate by their total submission to the divine laws of nature established by Allah. Their existence and the shifting of their shadows are physical signs of their humility before their Creator.
Is the prostration of angels different from the prostration of humans?
Angels prostrate in constant: perfect obedience without hesitation. Unlike humans: who have the choice to obey or disobey: angels are created in a state of absolute submission and are not too proud to bow before Allah.
