Allah revealed to Moses (peace be upon him): "A servant of Mine at the junction of the two seas is more learned than you." Moses said, "My Lord, how can I reach him?" He was told, "Carry a fish in a basket (a large basket or a pot), and where you lose the fish, he will be there." So he set out, and with him went his young companion, Yusha bin Nun. Moses carried a fish in a basket, and he and his companion walked until they reached the rock. Moses and his companion slept, and the fish stirred in the basket until it came out of it and fell into the sea. He said: Allah held back the flow of the water from it until it was like an arch, so there was a tunnel for the fish, and for Moses and his companion it was an amazing thing.
They went on for the rest of their day and night, and Moses's companion forgot to tell him. When morning came, Moses said to his companion, "Bring us (that is, give us) our meal! We have certainly been exhausted by this journey of ours (that is, we are tired from the length of the journey)." He said: and he did not feel tired until he had passed the place he had been told to go to. Yusha bin Nun said to him:
("Do you remember when we rested by the rock? ˹That is when˺ I forgot the fish. None made me forget to mention this except Satan. And the fish made its way into the sea miraculously.") Al-Kahf 18:63
Moses said, "That is ˹exactly˺ what we were looking for" (this is the place we want). "So they returned, retracing their footsteps." He said: they followed their own tracks back until they reached the rock.
(And ˹remember˺ when Moses said to his young assistant, "I will never give up until I reach the junction of the two seas, even if I travel for ages." But when they ˹finally˺ reached the point where the seas met, they forgot their ˹salted˺ fish, and it made its way into the sea, slipping away ˹wondrously˺. When they had passed further, he said to his assistant, "Bring us our meal! We have certainly been exhausted by today's journey." He replied, "Do you remember when we rested by the rock? ˹That is when˺ I forgot the fish. None made me forget to mention this except Satan. And the fish made its way into the sea miraculously." Moses responded, "That is ˹exactly˺ what we were looking for." So they returned, retracing their footsteps. أَوْحَى اللَّهُ إِلَى مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ أَنَّ عَبْدًا مِنْ عِبَادِي بِمَجْمَعِ الْبَحْرَيْنِ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ مِنْكَ، قَالَ مُوسَى: أَيْ رَبِّ كَيْفَ لِي بِهِ؟ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: احْمِلْ حُوتًا فِي مِكْتَلٍ (هو الزنبيل أو القدر) فَحَيْثُ تَفْقِدُ الْحُوتَ فَهُوَ ثَمَّ. فَانْطَلَقَ وَانْطَلَقَ مَعَهُ فَتَاهُ وَهُوَ يُوشَعُ بْنُ نُونٍ، فَحَمَلَ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ حُوتًا فِي مِكْتَلٍ، وَانْطَلَقَ هُوَ وَفَتَاهُ يَمْشِيَانِ حَتَّى أَتَيَا الصَّخْرَةَ، فَرَقَدَ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَفَتَاهُ، فَاضْطَرَبَ الْحُوتُ فِي الْمِكْتَلِ حَتَّى خَرَجَ مِنَ الْمِكْتَلِ فَسَقَطَ فِي الْبَحْرِ، قَالَ: وَأَمْسَكَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ جِرْيَةَ الْمَاءِ حَتَّى كَانَ مِثْلَ الطَّاقِ، فَكَانَ لِلْحُوتِ سَرَبًا، وَكَانَ لِمُوسَى وَفَتَاهُ عَجَبًا.
فَانْطَلَقَا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِمَا وَلَيْلَتِهِمَا، وَنَسِيَ صَاحِبُ مُوسَى أَنْ يُخْبِرَهُ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ لِفَتَاهُ: آتِنَا (أي أعطنا) غَدَاءَنَا لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِنْ سَفَرِنَا هَذَا نَصَبًا (أي تعبنا من طول السفر)، قَالَ: وَلَمْ يَنْصَبْ حَتَّى جَاوَزَ الْمَكَانَ الَّذِي أُمِرَ بِهِ. قَالَ لَهُ يُوشَعُ بْنُ نُونٍ:
(أَرَأَيْتَ إِذْ أَوَيْنَا إِلَى الصَّخْرَةِ فَإِنِّي نَسِيتُ الْحُوتَ وَمَا أَنسَانِيهُ إِلَّا الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُ وَاتَّخَذَ سَبِيلَهُ فِي الْبَحْرِ عَجَبًا) الكهف 18: 63
قَالَ مُوسَى: "ذَلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبْغِ" (هذا المكان الذي نريده) "فَارْتَدَّا عَلَى آثَارِهِمَا قَصَصًا"، قَالَ: يَقُصَّانِ آثَارَهُمَا (أي يمشيان على أثر خطواتهما) حَتَّى أَتَيَا الصَّخْرَةَ.

1. A Sign to Guide the Search: The Fish | علامةٌ لتوجيه البحث: الحوت
Rather than being given a fixed location, Musa is told to carry a fish and let its disappearance mark the meeting place. The sign would show itself only at the place itself.

At the rock, the fish stirred and slipped into the sea, and the hadith describes the water held back from it like an arch, leaving a tunnel. In the narration of Sahih al-Bukhari (4726), this happened while Musa was asleep: Yusha saw it, decided not to wake him, and then forgot to tell him when he woke. So the sign was seen, but its meaning was not understood until later.

يدرك موسى فورا أن العلامة الفائتة هي بالضبط ما كانا يبحثان عنه، فيرتدان على آثارهما حتى يعودا إلى الصخرة. وهناك، بعد هذا الرجوع المقصود، يجدان أخيرا العبد الذي آتاه الله رحمة وعلما من عنده مباشرة.
