Which Ayah Shows That Allah Chose Mary Above All the Women of the World?
It is the Ayah of Al-Imran 3:42
(And ˹remember˺ when the angels said, “O Mary! Surely Allah has selected you, purified you, and chosen you over all women of the world.)
1. The Quranic Declaration of Supreme Election |
In Surah Ali 'Imran, verse 42, the angels address Maryam with a twofold declaration: Allah chose her, purified her, and chose her above the women of the worlds.
2. The Twofold Selection (Al-Istifa'an) | معنى الاصطفاءين: التخصيص بالعبادة والتفضيل بالكرامة
Ibn Kathir explains that Allah chose her first for her abundant worship, her devotion, her honour and her purity, and then chose her again for her high rank above the women of the worlds. Al-Qurtubi reports from al-Zajjaj that the second choice was for bearing Jesus (peace be upon him). Her life of worship began with her mother's vow to dedicate her to Allah's service (3:35).
3. The Meaning of Her Purification |
The commentators give several meanings for "purified you" (tahharaki): al-Qurtubi reports from Mujahid and al-Hasan that it means from disbelief, and from al-Zajjaj, from every impurity such as menstruation and postnatal bleeding; al-Baghawi adds the views that it means from the touch of men, or from sins.
4. Prophetic Praise of Four Exemplary Women |
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of its women is Maryam daughter of Imran, and the best of its women is Khadijah" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3432, Sahih Muslim 2430). In Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3878 (graded sahih by al-Albani), she is named first among the four women he called sufficient among the women of the world, with Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and Asiyah; and in Sahih al-Bukhari 3411 he names Asiyah and Maryam as the women who attained perfection.
5. An Eternal Exemplar of Faith for All Believers |
Surah At-Tahrim sets Maryam as an example for the believers: she guarded her chastity, testified to the words of her Lord and His Scriptures, and was one of the devout (66:12). A whole surah of the Quran, Surah Maryam (19), also bears her name.
Scholarly Insight: Al-Qurtubi records disagreement over the scope of Mary's election above women (3:42): “It means the people of her time; this is reported from al-Hasan, Ibn Jurayj and others. It was also said: all the women of all worlds until the day the Trumpet is blown. This is the correct view, as we shall explain, and is the view of al-Zajjaj and others.” See Mary’s command to bow and prostrate. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Ali 'Imran.
