Who Was the First Wet-Nurse of the Prophet (PBUH)?
Thuwaiba, the Mawlat of Abu Lahab, uncle of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Then Abdulmutaleb got a woman from Bani Saad, Halima Al-Saadiya, to nurse him.
1. Thuwaybah's Role as the First Wet-Nurse |
Following his birth, Muhammad was nursed initially by his mother Aminah for a few days. He was then nursed by Thuwaybah, the maidservant of Abu Lahab, who suckled him with the milk of her newborn son Masruh.
2. Shared Nursing with Hamzah and Abu Salamah |
Thuwaybah had previously nursed the Prophet's uncle Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, as well as Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Asad al-Makhzumi. Consequently, Hamzah was both the Prophet's paternal uncle and his brother through shared breastfeeding.
3. Abu Lahab Manumits Thuwaybah |
Some later accounts relate that when Thuwaybah hurried to Abu Lahab to announce the birth of his brother's son, Abu Lahab was so delighted that he freed her on the spot in celebration, marking the joyful reception of the child in Mecca.
4. The Prophetic Loyalty and Kindness Toward Thuwaybah |
The Prophet (pbuh) and his wife Khadijah treated Thuwaybah with immense honour and kindness throughout her life. The Prophet consistently sent her gifts of clothing, provisions, and financial support from Mecca, and continued sending support from Medina until she passed away.
5. The Arab Custom of Desert Nursing |
Thuwaybah's temporary nursing served as a bridge until the arrival of the Bedouin women of Banu Sa'd, as Meccan nobility customarily sent their sons into the pristine desert air to ensure robust physical constitution and pure Arabic fluency.
Scholarly Insight: The Prophet's lifelong generosity toward Thuwaybah demonstrates the virtue of lifelong gratitude and loyalty toward anyone who provides care during childhood. Read more in the tafsir of Surah An-Nisa.
