When Muhammad was six years old, his mother Aminah undertook a journey of loyalty and familial devotion from Mecca to Yathrib (Medina). Accompanied by her young son and her servant Umm Ayman, she wished to introduce Muhammad to his maternal relatives, Banu an-Najjar, and visit the grave of his father Abdullah.
2. Falling Ill at the Desert Station of Al-Abwa |
After spending a month in Yathrib, Aminah began the return journey to Mecca. Midway through the desolate desert route, she was struck by severe illness at a location named Al-Abwa. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, and she passed away there, leaving the young boy doubly orphaned.
3. Umm Ayman's Faithful Care and Safe Return |

5. The Moving Visit to Her Grave Decades Later |
Decades later, the Prophet visited his mother's grave and wept, moving those around him to tears (Sahih Muslim 976); other reports place this visit at Al-Abwa.
