What Is the Difference Between a Ghazwah and a Sariyyah, and How Many Were There?
First: Many scholars who wrote in the biography of the Prophet differentiate between a ghazwah and a sariyyah.
Ghazwah: an expedition the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out on and in which he led the Muslims himself, whether or not there was fighting.
Sariyyah: one the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not go out on; there may or may not be fighting in it.
Second: An exception to this term is the Battle of Mu’tah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not go out in it, yet it is commonly called a “ghazwah”.
Third: Perhaps the reason for this is its importance, its large numbers, the great fighting in it, the interest that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed in it, and the fact that it was the first battle with the Romans.
Fourth: The biographers differ on the number of expeditions the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made, some of them mentioned that it was nineteen, some of them mentioned that it was twenty-one, and some of them said: twenty-six. And some of them said: Twenty-seven. It was said otherwise, and it was said: his expeditions and detachments together exceed a hundred, and he fought in person in eight or nine of them.
Fifth: Al-Bukhari narrated that Abu Ishaq said:
Once, while I was sitting beside Zayd ibn Arqam, he was asked, “How many Ghazwat did the Prophet undertake?” Zayd replied, “Nineteen.” They said, “In how many Ghazwat did you join him?” He replied, “Seventeen.” I asked, “Which of these was the first?” He replied, “Al-Usayrah or al-Ushayr.” I mentioned it to Qatadah, and he said, “Al-Ushayr.”
Sixth: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said that what Zayd ibn Arqam meant was the raids in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out himself, whether he fought or not, and Abu Ya’la narrated, with a sound chain, that the expeditions numbered twenty-one.
Accordingly, Zayd ibn Arqam missed two of them, perhaps al-Abwa’ and Buwat, as if they were unknown to him because he was young.
Seventh: Ibn Sa’d and al-Waqidi counted more broadly: the expeditions in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out himself were twenty-seven.
Eighth: Ibn Ishaq mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out on twenty-seven expeditions, the first he led himself being Waddan, which is the Battle of al-Abwa’, then the Battle of Buwat to the district of Radwa, then the Battle of the Ashira, from Yanbu, then the first Battle of Badr seeking Kurz ibn Jabir, then the Battle of Badr in which the chiefs of Quraysh were killed, then the Battle of Bani Sulaym until he reached al-Kudr, then the Battle of al-Sawiq seeking Abu Sufyan bin Harb until he reached Qarqarat al-Kudr, then the Battle of Ghatfan to Najd, which is the Battle of Dhi Amr, then the Battle of Bahran, a mine in the Hijaz above al-Fur’, then the Battle of Uhud, then the Battle of Hamra’ al-Asad, then the Battle of Bani Nadir, evacuated them to Khaybar, then the Battle of Dhat al-Riqa’ from Nakhl, then the Second Battle of Badr for the appointment with Abu Sufyan, then the Battle of Dumat Al-Jandal, then the Battle of the Trench, then the Battle of Bani Qurayza, then the Battle of Bani Lihyan of Hudhayl, then the Battle of Dhi Qard seeking Uyaynah bin Husn, then the Battle of Bani al-Mustalaq from Khuza’ah, then the Battle of Hudaybiyyah where he did not want a fight but he was confronted by the idolaters, then the Battle of Khaybar… Then the Battle of the Conquest of Mecca, then the Battle of Hunayn, then the Battle of Taif, and then the Battle of Tabuk.
Note: The earlier published wording gave Ibn Ishaq’s count as twenty-six, named the expedition of Bahran “Najran”, placed Dhat al-Riqa’ at Najran, and called the second Badr, the appointment with Abu Sufyan, the Battle of al-Sawiq. In Ibn Ishaq’s account, quoted by Ibn Kathir in al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya, the expeditions the Messenger of Allah led himself number twenty-seven, Dhat al-Riqa’ was at Nakhl, and al-Sawiq was the expedition in pursuit of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, a different one from the second Badr; Bahran is a known place in the Hijaz (al-Sira al-Halabiyya), so it was corrected.
Ninth: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fought in nine of the expeditions listed above: Badr, Uhud, Khandaq, Bani Qurayza, Bani al-Mustalaq, Khaybar, the conquest of Mecca, Hunayn, and Taif.
Tenth: In conclusion, the total number of invasions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his troops is close to one hundred or more, while the invasions in which he himself fought, are nine.
Eleventh: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned these views and then explained that those who gave the larger count counted each expedition separately, even when it was close in time to another, such as the Trench and Banu Qurayzah, or Uhud and Hamra’ al-Asad, while those who gave the smaller or middle count joined two expeditions close in time and counted them as one, such as the Trench and Banu Qurayzah, or Hunayn and Ta’if.
1. Technical Definition: Ghazwah and Sariyyah |
Many sirah writers distinguish the two by the Prophet's presence: a ghazwah is an expedition he went out on and led himself, whether or not there was fighting, and a sariyyah is one he sent without going himself. Mu'tah is the known exception: the Prophet ﷺ did not go out to it, yet it is commonly called a ghazwah.
2. Total Count of Ghazawat and Battles of Actual Combat |
The counts differ: Zayd ibn Arqam said nineteen (Sahih al-Bukhari 3949), Abu Ya'la reported twenty-one with a sound chain, as the answer quotes from Ibn Hajar, and Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Sa'd and al-Waqidi counted twenty-seven. Ibn Ishaq names nine in which he fought in person: Badr, Uhud, the Trench, Banu Qurayzah, Banu al-Mustaliq, Khaybar, the Conquest of Makkah, Hunayn and al-Ta'if (quoted by Ibn Kathir in al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya).
3. The Number of Detachments |
Ibn Ishaq counted thirty-eight missions and detachments, among them Ubaydah ibn al-Harith's to the lower end of Thaniyyat al-Murah, Hamzah's to the coast near al-Is, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas's to al-Kharrar and Abdullah ibn Jahsh's to Nakhlah (quoted by Ibn Kathir in al-Bidaya wa al-Nihaya). The answer notes that his expeditions and detachments together approach or exceed a hundred.
4. Ethics of Warfare in Prophetic Expeditions |
The Prophet's expeditions were bound by clear rules. He forbade the killing of women and children (Sahih al-Bukhari 3015, Sahih Muslim 1744), and when he appointed a commander over an army or a detachment he instructed him: “Fight, and do not steal from the spoils, do not act treacherously, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child” (Sahih Muslim 1731). The Quran also commands accepting peace when the enemy inclines to it (8:61).
Scholarly Insight: The Prophet ﷺ explained why he did not go out with every sariyyah himself (Sahih al-Bukhari 2797): “By the One in whose hand my soul is, were it not that there are men among the believers who would not be content to stay behind me, and I cannot find mounts to carry them, I would not stay behind any sariyyah that goes out to fight in the cause of Allah.” See the Prophet's mercy toward his community.
