What Is the Ruling in: If You Are Asked to Go Back, Go Back?
What is the ruling of the verse: And if you are asked to leave, then leave?
The answer draws three rulings from the verse: houses belong to their owners and may not be entered without permission, so permission must be sought, and if the owner cannot receive you, you go back as told and may not enter against his will (An-Nur 24:28).
1. Ownership and Privacy
Houses and dwellings belong to people and therefore you must not enter them without permission to do so. A home is a private sanctuary, and respecting this physical boundary is a fundamental Islamic duty that guarantees safety and comfort for all inhabitants.
2. The Obligation of Seeking Permission
Consequently, one must ask for permission before entering houses. This ensures that the homeowners are fully ready to receive visitors and protects them from sudden, embarrassing intrusion.
3. Departing When Asked
In such a case where a homeowner cannot receive guests, you must go away, as told. If permission is not granted to enter the house, then one is not allowed to enter in spite of its owners. Accepting this rejection with a pure heart is the true mark of a believer's excellent character.
The Quranic Command
Allah Almighty explicitly commands this behavior to purify the hearts of the believers from arrogance and entitlement.
(And if you are asked to leave, then leave. That is purer for you) Surah An Nur 24: 28.
1. Ask Three Times, Then Go Back | ثلاثا ثم ارجع
Abu Musa asked permission to enter on Umar three times, was not answered, and left. When Umar asked why, he said: The Messenger of Allah said: If one of you asks permission three times and is not given permission, let him go back. Ubayy ibn Ka'b and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri confirmed that they had heard it from the Prophet (Sahih al-Bukhari 6245).
2. Going Back Is Purer for You | هو أزكى لكم
Ibn Kathir explains: if they turn you away from the door, before permission or after it, go back; your going back is purer and cleaner for you. Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: it means do not stand at people's doors.
3. Going Back Content |
Qatada reported that one of the Muhajirun said: All my life I sought to act on this verse and never managed it: to ask permission to visit one of my brothers and be told go back, and to go back content, because of His words: and if you are asked to go back, go back; it is purer for you (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, An-Nur 24:28). This is the good character the answer describes in accepting refusal.
Scholarly Insight: The Prophet set the limit of asking at three times: if one is not given permission, let him go back (Sahih al-Bukhari 6245). Ibn Kathir explains that going back when turned away is purer for the visitor, and Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: do not stand at people's doors; one of the Muhajirun wished all his life to be told go back and to return content.
