Everything Perishes but Him

Ar-Rahman 55:27The Clear Quran

Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and Honour, will remain ˹forever˺.

The Name first comes in the middle of Surah ar-Rahman, after a sentence on everything else: every being on earth is bound to perish (55:26). Al-Sa'di counts them, humans, jinn, animals and all creatures. Then 55:27: only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and Honour, will remain. He explains the two halves. Majesty is greatness, pride and glory, for which He is exalted and revered; honour is His wide favour and generosity, by which He honours those close to Him, while they honour, love and turn to Him. Al-Baghawi adds that He honours His prophets with His kindness alongside His majesty.

Revered, Not Disobeyed

The surah ends on the Name: blessed is the Name of your Lord, full of Majesty and Honour (55:78). Ibn Kathir turns it into four duties. He deserves to be revered and not disobeyed, honoured and worshipped, thanked and not denied, remembered and not forgotten. Al-Sa'di explains the blessing in the verse: His good is great and abundant, His majesty dazzling, His glory complete, and He honours those close to Him.

Arabic:

Hold Fast to O Possessor of Majesty and Honour

The Prophet ﷺ told his community to keep calling on Allah by this Name: “Be constant with: ‘O Possessor of Majesty and Honor (Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām).” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3525, graded sahih by al-Albani). At-Tirmidhi himself judged that chain unusual and not well preserved, and named a chain from al-Hasan as more correct. The command is to stay with the Name, to call on Allah by it again and again.

Honouring Others Is Part of Revering Him

The Name joins majesty to honour, and a hadith Ibn Kathir cites on 55:78 joins them in conduct: “Glorifying Allah involves showing honour to a grey-haired Muslim and to one who can expound the Qur'an, but not to one who acts extravagantly regarding it, or turns away from it, and showing honour to a just ruler” (Sunan Abi Dawud 4843, graded hasan sahih by al-Albani). To honour an old Muslim, a balanced bearer of the Quran and a just ruler is counted as revering Allah.

Arabic:
