Reflections on the Name of Allah: Al-Adl

The Just, The One who is entitled to do what He does. Al-Adl is the one who is highly equitable and fair, who never oppresses, judges righteously and is fair.

The Name itself does not occur in the Quran, but the verb from Adl indicates that Allah commands with justice and is just in everything and anything He does.

۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَٱلْإِحْسَـٰنِ وَإِيتَآئِ ذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱلْبَغْىِ ۚ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ  

(Indeed, Allah commands justice, grace, as well as generosity to close relatives. He forbids indecency, wickedness, and aggression. He instructs you so perhaps you will be mindful.) An-Nahl 16:90

(وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًۭا وَعَدْلًۭا ۚ لَّا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ)

(The Word of your Lord has been perfected in truth and justice. None can change His Words. And He is the All-Hearing, All- Knowing.) Al-Anaam 6:115

Sometimes, one may wonder about the suffering in this world, and the calamities that befall some people; this reflection delves deep into the complexities of faith. It underscores the importance of understanding Allah’s sovereignty and control over all aspects of existence, which can be comforting in times of doubt and uncertainty. Acknowledging Allah’s supreme authority is fundamental, as it aligns with the core tenets of Islamic belief.  It is comprehensive seeing all His attributes working together, including Him being the All-Knower, the All-Wise, The Merciful, and The Embodiment of Justice.

Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ tells mankind, (“Surely We will test you with a bit of fear and hunger, and loss in wealth and lives and fruits, and give good tidings to the patient.” ) Al-Baqara 2:155. And Prophet Muhammad pbuh said, “No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.” Sahih al-Bukhari 5641   So, we must remember this life is only temporary, and with “every hardship is ease,” whether it is realized in this life or the hereafter. This is Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ justice – it will always be fair and measured.

Ensuring Fairness in Modern Governance

The principle of Al-Adl (The Just) is especially relevant in the context of modern governance and law. The concept of justice, as highlighted by this divine attribute, mandates that leaders and authorities enact laws and policies that are equitable and fair for all members of society. The Quran’s emphasis on justice is a directive for all, particularly those in positions of power:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ…
(Indeed, Allah commands justice and excellence…) (An-Nahl 16:90, سورة النحل)

This verse serves as a fundamental guideline for governance, reminding state and community leaders of their duty to uphold justice in every decision and policy. In modern contexts, this can translate into advocating for fair legal systems, ensuring equal treatment under the law, and fighting corruption and injustice at all societal levels. Implementing policies that reflect Al-Adl can lead to more stable, prosperous societies where citizens feel valued and fair treatment is the norm.

Al-Adl in Interpersonal Relationships

The attribute of Al-Adl also extends to everyday interpersonal relationships, emphasizing the importance of fairness and justice in our interactions. This divine characteristic teaches that justice is not only an abstract or large-scale requirement but also a personal duty that affects how we treat others in our families, workplaces, and communities. The Quran says:

وَإِذَا قُلْتُمْ فَاعْدِلُوا وَلَوْ كَانَ ذَا قُرْبَى…
(And when you speak, be just, even if it concerns a near relative…) (Al-An’am 6:152, سورة الأنعام)

This verse underscores the importance of fairness in our speech and actions, regardless of personal relationships or emotional biases. In today’s world, where social interactions are complex and often public, applying Al-Adl encourages honesty and integrity, fostering respectful and equitable communities.

Addressing Global Inequalities

Al-Adl is particularly poignant when considering global issues such as poverty, inequality, and human rights. This divine name reminds us of Allah’s ultimate justice and how He observes the conditions of all people, prompting believers to work towards reducing inequalities and addressing global challenges. Allah says:

وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِ…
(And your Lord is not unjust to the servants.) (Fussilat 41:46, سورة فصلت)

This reassurance motivates Muslims to strive for social justice and to aid those who are less fortunate, recognizing that every effort to improve the lives of others is seen and valued by Allah. Engaging in global humanitarian efforts, advocating for equitable resource distribution, and supporting policies that protect the vulnerable are all manifestations of Al-Adl in action, aiming to create a world where divine justice is mirrored in human actions.

Each of these aspects shows how the attribute of Al-Adl influences various facets of modern life, inspiring Muslims to act justly and to seek justice in all areas, from personal relationships to global engagements, reflecting the divine command to establish justice in every aspect of our lives.
