بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Surah Al-Ma’un is the 107th chapter of the Quran, containing 7 verses. Revealed in Makkah, it opens by asking whether you have seen the one who denies the Judgement, identifying him as the one who repulses the orphan and does not urge the feeding of the needy. The surah then pronounces woe upon those who pray yet are heedless of their prayer, who pray only to be seen by others, and who withhold small kindnesses and everyday assistance from their neighbours. Tafsir of the Verses
{ أَرَأَيْتَ ٱلَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ }
{ أَرَأَيْتَ }
(1) – هَلْ تُرِيدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَنْ تَعْرِفَ ذَلِكَ الذِي يَكْفُرُ بِالقِيَامَةِ وَالبَعْثِ وَالنُّشُورِ؟.
(1) – هَلْ تُرِيدُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَنْ تَعْرِفَ ذَلِكَ الذِي يَكْفُرُ بِالقِيَامَةِ وَالبَعْثِ وَالنُّشُورِ؟.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 1
1. Would you like to know, O Mohammad, who denies the Judgement and the Resurrection?
{ فَذَلِكَ ٱلَّذِي يَدُعُّ ٱلْيَتِيمَ }
(2) وَهُنَا يَصِفُ تَعَالَى ذَلِكَ الكَافِرَ بِالبَعْثِ وَالنُّشُورِ فَيَقُولُ: إِنَّهُ هُوَ الذِي يَدْفَعُ اليَتِيمَ دَفْعاً، وَيَزْجُرُهُ زَجْراً عَنِيفاً إِنْ جَاءَهُ يَطْلُبُ مِنْهُ شَيئاً أَوْ حَاجَةً، وَذَلِكَ احْتِقَاراً لِشَأْنِهِ وَاسْتِعْلاَءً عَلَيْهِ.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 2
2. Here Allah Almighty describes the one who disbelieves in Resurrection and in life after death. He says: “It is the one who pushes the orphan away, and scolds him violently if he comes to him to ask for anything. He behaves in this way because he despises the orphan’s status and feels superior to him.
{ وَلاَ يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ }
(3) – فَهُوَ بَخِيلٌ لاَ يُطْعِمُ الفَقِيرَ المِسْكِينَ الذِي لاَ يَجِدُ مَا يَأْكُلُ، وَلاَ يَحُثُّ غَيْرَهُ عَلَى إِطْعَامِهِ.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 3
3. For he is a miser, he does not feed the poor who have nothing to eat, nor does he encourage others to feed him.
{ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ }
(4) – فَالوَيْلُ والعَذَابُ لِمَنْ يُؤَخِّرُونَ أَدَاءَ الصَّلاَةِ عَنْ وَقْتِهَا، وَالوَيْلُ لِلَّذِينَ يُؤَدُّونَ الصَّلاَةَ بأَجْسَامِهِمْ وَأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ، وَقُلُوبُهُمْ غَائِبَةٌ بَعِيدَةٌ عَنِ الخُشُوعِ، وَعَنْ تَدَبُّرِ مَعَانِي مَا يَقْرَؤُونَ.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 4
4. Woe and torment to those who delay the performance of their prayers beyond their appointed time, and woe to those who perform their prayer with their bodies and tongues alone while their hearts are not into it and are far from being pious. Thus, they cannot reflect on the meaning of what they recite.
{ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلاَتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ }
(5) – فَيُؤَخِّرُونَ أَدَاءَ الصَّلاَةِ عَنْ وَقْتِهَا أَوْ يُصَلُّونَ وَقُلُوبُهُم بَعِيدَةٌ عَنِ الخُشُوعِ فَلاَ يَكُونُ لِلصَّلاَةِ أَثَرٌ فِي نُفُوسِهِمْ وَأَعْمَالِهِمْ.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 5
5. They delay their prayers past their due time, or they pray without true devotion; therefore, the prayers do not affect their souls or deeds.
{ ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَآءُونَ }
(6) – وَهُمْ إِلَى جَانِبِ البُخْلِ وَالقَسْوَةِ فِي مُعَامَلَةِ اليَتِيمِ وَالمِسْكِينِ، وَإِلَى جَانِبِ أَدَائِهِم الصَّلاَةَ، وَهُمْ سَاهُونَ، وَمِنْ غَيْرِ اسْتِحْضَارِ قُلُوبِهِمْ، فَإِنَّهُمْ فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ جَمَاعَةٌ مُرَاؤُونَ يَفْعَلُونَ مَا يَفْعَلُونَ طََلَباً لِحَمْدِ النَّاسِ، وَثَنَائِهِمْ عَلَيْهِمْ.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 6
6. And besides being miserly and harsh in dealing with the orphans and the needy, and besides carrying out their prayer while they are inattentive, without putting their hearts into it, they are hypocrites who perform the deeds they do to gain the praise and commendations of others.
{ وَيَمْنَعُونَ ٱلْمَاعُونَ }
(7) – وَهُمْ إِلَى جَانِبِ هَذَا كُلِّهُ لُؤَمَاء يَكْرَهُونَ الخَيْرَ للنَّاسِ، وَيَمْنَعُونَ مَعْرُوفَهُمْ عَنْهُمْ، فَيَمْتَنِعُونَ عَنْ إِعَارَةِ الفُقَرَاءِ مِنْ جِيرَانِهِمْ مَا هُمْ بِحَاجَةٍ إِلَيهِ فِي مَعَاشِهِمْ كَالقِدْرِ لِلطَّبْخِ، وَالأَدَوَاتِ لِلعَمَلِ.
Surah Al-Ma’un: Verse 7
7. In addition to all that, they are mean people who resent the good deeds done to others. They hold back their charity from them and refrain from lending their poor neighbours what they need for their daily subsistence, such as cooking pots and other work tools.
