Surah Al-Masad, also known as Al-Lahab, is the 111th chapter of the Quran, containing 5 verses. Revealed in Makkah, it condemns Abu Lahab, the Prophet’s own uncle, who opposed him with fierce hostility, declaring that his hands will perish and he himself will perish, and that neither his wealth nor what he earned will avail him. The surah describes him burning in a Flaming Fire, together with his wife, the carrier of firewood, who slandered the Prophet, a rope of twisted palm-fiber around her neck. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Masad in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ }

Surah Al-Masad: Verse 1
1. The Messenger of Allah went out to the valley one day. He climbed the mountain and cried out: “Come to me in the morning.” The people of Quraish then assembled, and he said to them: “If I were to tell you that the enemy is approaching you in the morning or evening, would you believe me?” They said: “Yes!” He said: “I am warning you of severe punishment!” Abu Lahab said to him: “And is it for this reason that you have gathered us? Woe to you.” Thus Allah Almighty revealed this chapter. The meaning of this verse is: Loss, destruction and perdition to Abu Lahab (the prophet’s uncle). Allah Almighty associates perdition and loss with Abu Lahab’s hands because the latter are the instruments of action and violence. He was indeed lost and destroyed. (The first sentence is a prayer while the second reports that the prayer has been answered and that Abu Lahab has indeed lost this world and the next.)
{ مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ }
Surah Al-Masad: Verse 2
2. In the hereafter, neither his wealth will not avail him, nor his deeds which consisted in antagonizing the Prophet (peace be upon him) and harming him.
{ سَيَصْلَىٰ نَاراً ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ }
Surah Al-Masad: Verse 3
3. He will taste the heat of fire in the Hereafter, and will be punished in its flames.
{ وَٱمْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ }

Surah Al-Masad: Verse 4
4. His wife will also be tortured in this fire for her pursuit of temptation and slander to eclipse the call of Islam and to harm the Prophet (peace be upon him) in word and deed. (The wife of Abu Lahab was called Arwa bint Harb, and she was a sister of Abu Soufian bin Harb. She was known as Um Jamil).
{ فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ }

Surah Al-Masad: Verse 5
5. Around her neck will be a twisted rope of palm leaf fiber to secure a bundle of wood to her neck like a professional woodcutter. Almighty Allah portrayed her in this contemptible manner as a sign of humiliation to her and her husband.
