Surah Al-Humazah is the 104th chapter of the Quran, containing 9 verses. Revealed in Makkah, it opens with a warning of woe to every scandal-monger and backbiter who amasses wealth and counts it over, imagining that his wealth will make him immortal. The surah warns that he will surely be thrown into the Crushing Fire, Hutamah, a Fire kindled by Allah which rises over the hearts, closing with a description of it as a Fire closing in on the guilty in extended columns. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Humazah in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ ويْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 1
1. Allah Almighty threatens with punishment and sorrow those who are in the habit of backbiting, censuring, and denigrating others, slandering them severely behind their backs, whether in word or by implication. (It is said that this verse was revealed either in connection with Al-Akhnass ibn Shuraik or with Al-Walid ibn al-Mughira. Both had slandered and denigrated the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).)
{ ٱلَّذِى جَمَعَ مَالاً وَعَدَّدَهُ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 2
2. The reason why he disparages people and condemns them is that he has amassed a great deal of money and counted it, for he only accords honour and status to wealth.
{ يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 3
3. He believes that his wealth will guarantee him eternal life on earth and give him security against death. Therefore, he behaves as if he were one of those who think that they are immortal.
{ كَلاَّ لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي ٱلْحُطَمَةِ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 4
4. However, his money will not make him immortal, nor will it protect him against Allah’s punishment. He will be thrust into the fire of Hell just like a date pit is hurled. (The Fire is called hutama (crusher) because it crushes all that is thrown into it, leaving no traces.)
{ وَمَآ أَدْرَاكَ مَا ٱلْحُطَمَةُ }
{ أَدْرَاكَ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 5
5. This crusher is not something that you know about.
{ نَارُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُوقَدَةُ }
Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 6
6. It is Allah’s kindled fire that He has prepared as a punishment for the disobedient unbelievers.
{ ٱلَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلأَفْئِدَةِ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 7
7. Its torture will reach their hearts and will nip and tear them painfully. The heart is the organ that suffers most pain. Thus when the flames tear at the heart, one is in extreme pain.
{ إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 8
8. The Fire will surround them completely and its doors will shut on them, so that they cannot escape it.
{ فِي عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةِ }

Surah Al-Humazah: Verse 9
9. The doors of the Fire will close on them and will be pulled by expandable columns of steel, so no door can be opened to them (or they will be tied down in the Fire and fastened to expandable pillars, so that they cannot move or save themselves.)
