Zachariah Asked Allah for a Sign About Granting Him a Son. What Was the Sign?
عندما بشرت الملائكة زكريا عليه السلام بأن الله تعالى سيرزقه بولدٍ، طلب من ربه أن يعطيه إشارة. ما هي العلامة؟
The sign was that he would not be able to speak to anyone for three whole days except by gestures.

1. A Sign for His Own Reassurance | علامةٌ لطمأنته هو
Many prophetic signs in the Quran are public spectacles meant to convince onlookers: a staff turning into a serpent, the she-camel of Salih (peace be upon him). Zachariah's sign was of another kind. He asked, in Ibn Kathir's words on 3:41, for "a sign by which I may know that the child is coming from me." It was given to reassure Zachariah himself.

Surah Maryam specifies he could not speak "despite being healthy" (sawiyyan), which Ibn Kathir explains as "sound, without illness or defect." His body was entirely sound; only his ability to address people in ordinary speech was withheld, and only for a fixed three-day term he already knew the end of. It was a controlled, deliberate sign, not an affliction.
