Why did Surah At-Tawbah not start with the Basmala?
لماذا لم تبدأ سورة التوبة بالبسملة؟
There are two primary scholarly reasons: 1) It is considered a continuation of Surah al-Anfal. 2) Its themes of stern warning and punishment for hypocrites contrast with the message of mercy conveyed by the Basmala.
يرجع ذلك لسببين رئيسيين: الأول أنها مكملة لسورة الأنفال، والثاني أنها سورة نزلت بالوعيد والقتال وبيان مخازي المنافقين، وهذا لا يتناسب مع معاني الرحمة الموجودة في البسملة.
Islamic scholars provide two main explanations for this uniqueness:
- Continuation: Surah At-Tawbah is viewed as a completion of the previous chapter, Surah al-Anfal, hence the Basmala was not repeated.
- Theme of Justice: This Surah focuses on war, punishment of the disbelievers, and exposing the hypocrites. Since the Basmala is a symbol of Allah's infinite mercy, it was omitted to align with the stern nature of the revelation.
Scholarly Insight: By omitting the Basmala, the Quran draws immediate attention to the gravity of the subject matter - the declaration of dissociation (Bara'ah) from those who violated their covenants.

١. التكملة: أن سورة التوبة مكملة لسورة الأنفال، ولذلك لم تفصل بينهما البسملة.
٢. مقام الوعيد: أن البسملة "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم" عنوان للرحمة، بينما بدأت سورة التوبة ببيان فضائح المنافقين والوعيد والقتال، وهذا الموطن ليس موطن رحمة بل موطن تخويف وتبرؤ.
