The ayah immediately before this one shows the moment: “And he turned away from them and said, ‘Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf.'” Yaqoub did not display this grief in front of his sons; he stepped away first. This was decades after Yusuf was first lost, and the sorrow was still fresh enough to cost him his eyesight, a physical toll from a wound he had carried privately the entire time.

تُظهر الآية التي تسبق هذه الآية اللحظة: “وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَا أَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ”. فلم يُظهر يعقوب حزنه أمام أبنائه، بل انصرف عنهم أولًا. وكان هذا بعد عقودٍ من فقد يوسف، وكان الحزن لا يزال طازجًا لدرجة أنه كلّفه بصره.

The ayah calls him “kazim,” one who suppresses and contains what he feels rather than releasing it outwardly. This matches his own earlier words, “patience is most fitting” (Yusuf 12:83), said right after his sons brought him news of Yusuf’s brother. His whitened eyes were not a sign that his patience had failed; they were the visible cost of holding an enormous grief in check for years rather than a moment of losing composure.

تصفه الآية بـ”الكظيم”، أي من يكتم ما يشعر به بدلًا من إظهاره. وهذا يوافق قوله السابق: “فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ” (يوسف 12: 83). فابيضاض عينيه لم يكن علامة فشل صبره، بل كان الثمن الظاهر لكتمان حزنٍ عظيمٍ سنواتٍ طويلة.

His sons responded harshly, telling him he would not stop remembering Yusuf “until you become fatally ill” (Yusuf 12:85). Yaqoub’s answer defines the whole episode: “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know” (Yusuf 12:86). He never complained to people, only to Allah, and his certainty that Yusuf was still alive, which the rest of the surah confirms, came from a knowledge his own sons did not share.

ردّ أبناؤه بقسوة قائلين إنه لن يكف عن ذكر يوسف “حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ حَرَضًا” (يوسف 12: 85). فأجابهم بما يلخص القصة كلها: “إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ” (يوسف 12: 86).
