عاقب الله تعالى قوم نوح بالطوفان العظيم الذي أغرق الأرض ومن عليها إلا من كان مع نوح، فقد فُتحت السماء بالماء العظيم وتفجرت عيون الأرض حتى كانت أمواج ذلك الطوفان كالجبال. فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ ﴿١١﴾ وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ عَلَىٰ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ ﴿١٢﴾ (سورة القمر: 11-12). فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَنجَيْنَاهُ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ فِي الْفُلْكِ وَأَغْرَقْنَا الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا عَمِينَ (سورة الأعراف: 64). وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ لَّمَّا كَذَّبُوا الرُّسُلَ أَغْرَقْنَاهُمْ وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ آيَةً ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا (سورة الفرقان: 37). وَهِيَ تَجْرِي بِهِمْ فِي مَوْجٍ كَالْجِبَالِ (سورة هود: 42).
