What Is the Ruling on Umrah?
What is the ruling of Umrah?
In Islamic jurisprudence, the ruling of Umrah (the minor pilgrimage) is generally considered a highly recommended Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah) by the Hanafi and Maliki schools, while the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools view it as obligatory. It is a highly virtuous act of worship that brings immense spiritual rewards.
The legal ruling of Umrah distinguishes it from the obligatory Hajj, classifying it as a highly emphasized voluntary act.
Is Umrah obligatory like Hajj?
According to the Hanafi and Maliki schools of Islamic jurisprudence, Umrah is a highly recommended Sunnah, not a strict obligation like Hajj. However, the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools view it as obligatory once in a lifetime.
What did the Prophet ﷺ say about the ruling of Umrah?
In a report graded weak by Al-Albani (At-Tirmidhi 931), Jabir narrates that when asked if Umrah was obligatory, the Prophet ﷺ replied that it is not, but performing it is more virtuous and better for the believer.
What is the spiritual benefit of Umrah?
Umrah holds immense spiritual benefits. It acts as an expiation for sins, purifies the soul, and brings the believer closer to Allah.
The Ruling and Evidence of Umrah
1. The Sunnah Status
It is a Sunnah. (Umrah is technically defined as a minor pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year. The Hanafi and Maliki schools classify it as a confirmed Sunnah [Sunnah Mu'akkadah], meaning it is highly recommended but not strictly obligatory like Hajj).
2. The Prophetic Evidence
In a report graded weak by Al-Albani (At-Tirmidhi 931), Jabir narrated that: The Prophet pbuh was asked about whether Umrah was obligatory? He said: "No. But if you perform Umrah it is more virtuous." (This report recorded by Ahmad and Al-Tirmidhi (931) is cited for the Sunnah view; Al-Tirmidhi called it hasan sahih, but Al-Albani graded its chain weak, highlighting the immense spiritual merit of undertaking the journey voluntarily).
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), the ruling of Umrah is a matter of classical debate. While the Maliki and Hanafi schools, citing the report of Jabir whose chain Al-Albani graded weak (At-Tirmidhi 931), hold that Umrah is a highly recommended Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah), the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools consider it obligatory (Fard) once in a lifetime, just like Hajj, based on other scriptural interpretations. However, all scholars universally agree on its immense virtue. The Prophet ﷺ stated that performing one Umrah to the next serves as an expiation for the sins committed between them (Sahih Al-Bukhari 1773), encouraging Muslims to perform it whenever they have the physical and financial means.
1. Scholarly Difference: Sunnah Mu'akkadah vs. Obligation |
Classical jurists differ on whether Umrah is strictly obligatory once in a lifetime: the Hanafi and Maliki schools deem it an emphatic, highly rewarded Sunnah, citing the report in At-Tirmidhi (931), whose chain Al-Albani graded weak. Conversely, the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools classify it as obligatory based on Surah Al-Baqarah (2:196).
2. Pillars and Simple Mechanics of Umrah |
Unlike Hajj, which involves multiple days across Arafah, Mina, and Muzdalifah, Umrah is concise and can be completed within a few hours. Its essential pillars are three: entering Ihram (from the designated Miqat, which is an obligation of Umrah), performing seven circuits of Tawaf around the Ka'bah, and seven laps of Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, concluded by shaving or trimming the hair. The verse the Prophet recited when he reached Safa is explained in which verse the Prophet recited at Safa and Marwah.
3. Continuous Expiation of Sins and Banishment of Poverty |
The Prophet highlighted the immense spiritual return of performing Umrah repeatedly: "One Umrah to the next is an expiation for whatever sins occur between them." (Sahih Al-Bukhari 1773) Authenticated hadiths also declare that performing Hajj and Umrah alternately removes poverty and sins just as a bellows removes dross from iron (At-Tirmidhi 810, graded hasan sahih).
4. Special Virtue of Umrah During Ramadan |
Performing Umrah during the blessed month of Ramadan carries an extraordinary spiritual magnitude: the Prophet declared in Sahih al-Bukhari (1863) that an Umrah during Ramadan equals the reward of performing Hajj alongside the Prophet himself.
Scholarly Insight: Umrah functions as an accessible spiritual oasis, allowing believers throughout the year to shed worldly burdens and renew their covenant at the Ka'bah. Read more in the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah.
