What Great Position Did Yusuf Hold, and Why Was He Given It?
First, Yusuf was appointed to the position of managing the store-houses of the land, equivalent to the position of minister of economy or finance in our time. Second, the one who appointed him was the king, after the king had first asked to meet him and Yusuf refused to leave prison, and after his innocence was shown, the king summoned him, “Bring him to me. I will employ him exclusively in my service,” meaning make him one of his closest attendants, because he saw his integrity and purity from obscenities, and having interpreted the vision, realized he possessed knowledge and good judgment. Third, Yusuf was brought honored and respected to the king’s council, “and when Yusuf spoke to him,” the king admired him even more, and his standing increased, so the king said, “Today you are highly esteemed and fully trusted by us,” meaning you hold a position of standing with us, and you are also entrusted with our secrets. Fourth, Yusuf requested to be placed in charge of the store-houses, which managed all the financial aspects of the land’s produce, as a keeper and administrator, stating that two qualities entitled him to this position, “Put me in charge of the store-houses of the land, for I am truly reliable and knowledgeable.” Those two qualities are trustworthiness, meaning preserving whatever he was responsible for from loss or misplacement, and knowledge of how to manage public affairs, how to give and withhold, and how to act appropriately in every situation. Fifth, this request from Yusuf was intended to serve the public interest, and Yusuf was not eager for authority for its own sake, but he knew from himself a competence and trustworthiness the king did not yet know, and so he asked to be placed over the treasuries, and the king appointed him as guardian over them. The reason for this empowerment was mercy from Allah Almighty for His Prophet Yusuf and for the people of Egypt and its surroundings, to save them from famine, as well as a reward for Yusuf’s own excellence, for Yusuf was among the foremost of the good-doers, and so goodness was granted to him by the Lord of Might in this world and the next, as Allah said, “This is how We established Yusuf in the land to settle wherever he pleased. We shower Our mercy on whoever We will, and We never discount the reward of the good-doers, and the reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and are mindful of Allah” (Surah Yusuf 12:54-57). This means through hidden planning and divine decree, Allah established Yusuf in that position, and the reason for it was the combination of piety and faith, for through piety one forsakes what is forbidden, whether major or minor sins, and through complete faith the heart affirms what Allah commanded it to affirm, followed by the deeds of the heart and the limbs, both obligatory and recommended.
1. A Position Requested, Not Merely Accepted |
Unusually, Yusuf did not simply accept whatever role the king offered; he specifically requested authority over the treasuries and stated exactly why he was qualified. Scholars point to this directness as permissible and even commendable self-recommendation, offering one’s genuine competence for a role of public benefit is not the same as seeking status for its own sake, a distinction the original answer itself draws explicitly.
2. Two Qualifications Still Used to Evaluate Leadership |
“Reliable and knowledgeable,” hifz (trustworthy safekeeping) and ilm (competence), are cited by scholars as the two essential qualities for any position of responsibility, not merely a financial post in ancient Egypt. Character alone without competence, or competence alone without integrity, is considered insufficient; Yusuf’s own claim rested on having both together.
3. Reward Tied Directly to Righteousness |
Surah Yusuf 12:56-57 explicitly frames this position as reward for being among “the good-doers,” then immediately adds that the reward of the Hereafter is even greater for those who believe and remain mindful of Allah. This detail prevents the story from being read as simply “worldly success follows skill,” instead tying Yusuf’s rise directly to his character and faith, with an even greater reward still to come.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Yusuf 12:54-57 records Yusuf’s appointment to oversee Egypt’s treasuries, a position he requested based on his trustworthiness and knowledge, which the Quran frames as both a mercy from Allah and a reward for his righteousness.
