What Sign Confirmed Saul’s Kingship?
From the dawn of their history, the children of Israel had the Torah and the ark which contained the Torah, and the rest of what Moses and Aaron had left behind, some of which were the remaining tablets.
When they strayed and transgressed, God sent them Palestinian giants to rob them of it. They conquered the Jews and took away the ark. Their prophet then said that the sign of God’s approval of King Saul is that he should return unto them the ark. The angels arrived carrying the ark and placed it in Saul’s hands while the people stared. This was proof to the children of Israel that their prophet told the truth when he transmitted the divine command.
(Their prophet further told them, “The sign of Saul’s kingship is that the Ark will come to you, containing reassurance from your Lord and relics of the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, which will be carried by the angels. Surely in this is a sign for you, if you ˹truly˺ believe.”) Al-Baqarah 2:248
1. A Sign Rooted in What Had Been Lost |
The Ark had held deep significance for the Children of Israel since the earliest days of their history, containing the Torah and relics left by Musa and Harun. When they strayed from Allah’s guidance, it was taken from them by their enemies, so its unexpected return was not a minor gesture; it was the restoration of something central to their identity, which is precisely why it could serve as convincing proof.
2. Delivered by Angels, Not Recovered by Force |
The Ark did not return because Saul’s forces won it back in battle; it arrived carried by angels, placed before Saul while the people watched. This detail matters because it removed any possible human explanation for the Ark’s return, leaving the people with nothing to credit but Allah’s own confirmation of the appointment they had doubted.
3. A Sign That Carried Reassurance, Not Just Proof |
The verse specifies that the Ark contained “sakinah,” tranquility or reassurance, from their Lord, not simply relics as evidence. Scholars note this double function: the Ark’s arrival proved the prophet’s truthfulness about Saul, while its contents also offered the people a sense of calm after the turmoil of losing it and doubting their new king.
4. Legitimacy Tied to Two Earlier Prophets |
The relics inside the Ark are specifically identified as belonging to the families of Musa and Harun, not generic religious objects. By tying the sign of Saul’s kingship to items connected with these two earlier prophets, the Ayah roots his legitimacy in continuity with a prophetic history the people already recognized and trusted.
