What Was Yusuf’s Prayer at the End of the Surah, and What Does It Teach?
Allah Almighty says: Yusuf pbuh prayed to his Lord saying: “My Lord! You have surely granted me authority and taught me the interpretation of dreams. ˹O˺ Originator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Allow me to die as one who submits and join me with the righteous.” (Yusuf 12:101)
After mentioning the grace of Allah, he started praying and mentioned several things:
The first is the recognition of the pleasures of this world that Allah has bestowed upon him: the grace of ruling on earth, and the second grace is the grace of knowledge.
Second, the other grace of the Hereafter which is the grace of the true religion, Islam.
Third, Yusuf pbuh called on the Lord of Honor, to say (“My Lord!) (Originator): the Creator of heavens and earth, without anything similar prior to it.
Fourth: He asked Allah Almighty for protection and support, “You are my Protector” in this world and the hereafter.
Fifth: “Allow me to die as one who submits”: this is a reference to the great grace that Allah has bestowed upon him, which is the true religion, he asks Him to remain on that religion till the time of death.
Six: He asks his Lord to make him aware of those righteous servants of Allah who preceded him, who were committed to obedience.
This prayer is meant to teach a number of things, including:
First, the greatest blessing of Allah on His creation is the blessing of Islam; to live and die as a Muslim. Therefore Yusuf pbuh asked his Lord, and Muhammad pbuh asked him that also: he said: “O Allah, the Turner of hearts, fix my heart on your religion.”
Second: no matter how many graces and blessings the human being is given, they are mortal and what remains is only the bliss of the Hereafter, and the grace of religion. That is why Yusuf pbuh asked his Lord for the protection of his faith and he did not ask for the protection of authority.
Thirdly, what man is given from the worldly bliss is something scarce, and the knowledge that he is given compared to Allah’s knowledge is negligible, so Yusuf pbuh says: “[something] of sovereignty”, “from the interpretation of dreams”, i.e. some of the sovereignty, and some of the knowledge.
Fourth: Whatever blessings man has now, and whatever happens to him in the near or distant future are from Allah and not from anyone else, so you find Yusuf pbuh attributing grace to the Bestower, Almighty, “My Lord! You have surely granted me”, He also asks Him for victory and success, “You are my Guardian in this world and the Hereafter”, without His Grace man would perish.
Fifth: And those blessings that Allah grants His creations, are not a reward for some good that man had done towards his Lord, but they are purely a virtue of Allah over His creation, and therefore Yusuf pbuh says, “My Lord! You have surely granted me”, i.e. You gave me, a gift that was not a repayment of any good man had done, it is but a gift from Allah the Generous and Honoured.
1. The Same Prayer, Now With Its Full Context |
This is the same closing supplication cited on the prayer of Prophet Yusuf, which preserves the verse itself. What this page adds is the surrounding exegesis, the six things Yusuf names within the prayer and the five lessons scholars draw from it, none of which the shorter page covers.
2. Naming Two Blessings Among Many | ذكر نعمتين من بين نعم كثيرة
By this point in the surah, Yusuf had regained his freedom, his family, and his father’s sight, yet his prayer names only rule and the interpretation of dreams by name. Scholars read this as representative rather than exhaustive gratitude, naming the blessings closest to his own role and character as a stand-in for everything Allah had given him.
3. Asking to Die a Muslim, Not to Reign Longer |
At the peak of his worldly authority, Yusuf’s request is not for the throne to last or for greater power, but for his life to end in submission to Allah. This ordering, asking for the safety of his faith rather than the continuation of his rule, is treated as the clearest evidence in the prayer of what he actually valued most.
4. Asking to Join the Righteous, Not Just to Be Saved |
Yusuf’s final request is not framed only around his own individual salvation, but around being joined with the righteous who came before him. Scholars note this as a communal vision of the Hereafter, wanting to belong among the righteous rather than simply to escape punishment alone.
5. A Prayer Later Echoed by the Prophet Muhammad |
The concern for one’s faith remaining firm until death did not end with Yusuf. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have prayed, “O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion,” a request scholars point to as the same underlying concern voiced across different prophets in different eras, that steadfastness in faith matters more than any circumstance surrounding it.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Yusuf 12:101 closes the surah’s narrative with Yusuf’s own prayer, naming Allah’s blessings on him and asking above all to die in submission and be joined with the righteous. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Yusuf.
