Why did the order of provision for children and parents change in the Quran?
This linguistic precision in the Quran addresses two different human anxieties. In the first case (Al-An'am), the parents are struggling with existing poverty ("min imlaq"), so Allah reassures them of their own survival first. In the second case (Al-Isra'a), the parents fear that children will consume their current wealth ("khashyata imlaq"), so Allah reassures them that the children's sustenance is guaranteed separately and will not diminish the parents' portion.
Quranic Evidence |
1. Existing Poverty |
(Say, "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you. [He commands] that you not associate anything with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and do not kill your children because of poverty; We provide sustenance for you and for them. And do not approach immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed. And do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed] except by [legal] right. This has He instructed you that you may use reason.")
2. Fear of Future Poverty |
(And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely killing them is a heinous sin.)
Scholarly Insight: This variation is one of the classic examples of Quranic eloquence (Balagha). It teaches that Allah's provision is tailored to the specific worry of the heart. By placing the most "at-risk" group first in each verse, Allah provides immediate psychological and spiritual relief to the believer.
