Many People Believe the Jinn Know the Unseen. When Did the Jinn Find Out That Sulaiman (PBUH) Had Died?
Sulaiman pbuh commanded the jinn who worked for him, and they were subjected to him by Allah’s permission. Had they known the unseen, they would have known that Sulaiman had died while he was standing in his shrine praying and leaning on his cane, and they would have been set free. But they did not know and they waited there while (they thought) he prayed until the termites ate his cane and he fell.
(When We decreed Solomon’s death, nothing indicated to the ˹subjected˺ jinn that he was dead except the termites eating away his staff. So when he collapsed, the jinn realized that if they had ˹really˺ known the unseen, they would not have remained in ˹such˺ humiliating servitude.) Saba 34:14
1. Death While Standing in Prayer |
Commentators report that Sulaiman died while standing in his place of prayer, leaning on his staff, his body remaining upright even after death. This detail sets up the entire lesson of the Ayah: because nothing outwardly changed, there was no visible sign for anyone watching, jinn included, to know that he had already passed away.
2. Still Laboring Under Compulsion, Unaware |
The jinn subjected to Sulaiman’s command continued waiting for his prayer to end, still bound to their labor, with no idea that the one they served had already died. Their continued servitude in his apparent presence shows how completely dependent their obedience was on a command they assumed was still active.
3. A Small Creature, Not Special Insight |
What finally revealed his death was not any perception on the jinn’s part, but termites eating through his staff until it could no longer bear his weight and he collapsed. The mechanism the Ayah singles out is deliberately mundane, an ordinary insect, not a supernatural faculty of the jinn themselves.
4. A Direct Refutation of Claims to Hidden Knowledge |
The Ayah states its own conclusion explicitly: had the jinn truly known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating servitude after Sulaiman’s death. This is presented as a direct correction to any claim that jinn possess knowledge of the unseen, since the very group popularly imagined to have such insight is shown here failing to perceive something as significant as a human death right in front of them.
5. Continued Work Without Knowledge of His Death |
The jinn continued working because they did not know Sulaiman had died. Ibn Kathir explains that when the staff gave way and he fell, jinn and people alike realized that the jinn do not know the unseen, as they had imagined and had led people to believe.
Scholarly Insight: In Sahih al-Bukhari 7561, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reports that the Prophet ﷺ said about soothsayers’ true predictions: “That is a word of truth which a jinn snatches and then clucks into the ear of his associate like the clucking of a hen. They then mix into it more than a hundred lies.” See how jinn acquire reports of hidden events. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Saba.
