ورد اسم "سقر"، وهو أحد أسماء نار جهنم، أربع مرات في القرآن الكريم؛ حيث ذكر مرة واحدة في سورة القمر وثلاث مرات في سورة المدثر.

سقر اسم من أسماء النار التي أعدها الله للعصاة والمكذبين: وهو اسم يوحي بشدة الحرارة والحرق. وقد ورد هذا الاسم في سياق الوعيد والتحذير من عاقبة الإعراض عن ذكر الله والوقوع في الآثام. تكرار الاسم في سورة المدثر بشكل خاص يبرز هول هذا العذاب ودقة وصفه ليكون زاجراً للنفوس عن الغي.

1. Surah Al-Qamar (Verse 48)

(The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces [it will be said]: "Taste the touch of Saqar!")

(يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِي النَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا مَسَّ سَقَرَ)

2 & 3. Surah Al-Muddathir (Verses 26-27)

(I will drive him into Saqar. And what can make you know what is Saqar?)

(سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ * وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ)

4. Surah Al-Muddathir (Verse 42)

([They will be asked]: "What led you into Saqar?")

(مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ)

Scholarly Insight: Linguistically: the word Saqar is derived from a root meaning to scorch or change the color of the skin through heat. Scholars of Tafsir note that the description in Surah Al-Muddathir: "It leaves nothing and spares nothing": highlights that Saqar is a total punishment that encompasses the entire being of the one entering it.
