The Believer Reminded His People Continuously of Allah. What Does This Show, and How Did He End His Sermon?
The Islamic missioner who fears Allah’s punishment upon his people should keep calling them to worship Allah and should remind them continuously of Him until Allah establishes what He has decreed.
(“And the man who believed urged, ‘O my people! Follow me, ˹and˺ I will lead you to the Way of Guidance. O my people! This worldly life is only ˹a fleeting˺ enjoyment, whereas the Hereafter is truly the home of settlement. Whoever does an evil deed will only be paid back with its equivalent. And whoever does good, whether male or female and is a believer, they will enter Paradise, where they will be provided for without limit. O my people! How is it that I invite you to salvation, while you invite me to the Fire? You invite me to disbelieve in Allah and associate with Him what I have no knowledge of, while I invite you to the Almighty, Most Forgiving. There is no doubt that whatever ˹idols˺ you invite me to ˹worship˺ are not worthy to be invoked either in this world or the Hereafter. ˹Undoubtedly,˺ our return is to Allah, and the transgressors will be the inmates of the Fire. You will remember what I say to you, and I entrust my affairs to Allah. Surely Allah is All-Seeing of all ˹His˺ servants.'”) Ghafer 40:38-44
1. Why Continuous Reminding Matters |
The tafsir draws a general principle from the believer’s persistence: anyone who fears Allah’s punishment coming upon their people has a duty to keep calling and reminding them, continuing until Allah’s own decree plays out, whatever that turns out to be. His effort was not contingent on visible success.
2. “Why Do I Call You to Salvation While You Call Me to the Fire?”
The believer names a striking inversion directly: he is trying to save the very people who are simultaneously trying to draw him toward ruin. Stating this contrast plainly forces his listeners to confront exactly what they are doing, urging their own rescuer toward destruction while he persists in calling them to safety.
3. Naming Exactly What They Are Asking of Him | تسمية ما يطلبونه منه بدقة
He specifies precisely what their invitation amounts to: disbelief in Allah, and associating with Him something he has no knowledge of, contrasted with his own call to “the Almighty, Most Forgiving.” This precision refuses to let the disagreement remain vague, the two paths on offer are stated in exact, comparable terms.
4. Their Gods Have No True Call in Either World | آلهتهم لا دعوة لها في الدارين
He dismisses what they worship as having no genuine claim on anyone’s devotion, neither in this world nor the Hereafter, before stating plainly that everyone’s return is to Allah, and that transgressors will be the people of the Fire. This closing theological statement leaves no ambiguity about where he believed the real stakes of the disagreement lay.
5. A Final Word to Remember, and Complete Reliance on Allah |
He closes with a quiet confidence, “you will remember what I say to you,” and hands the outcome entirely over to Allah, “I entrust my affairs to Allah, surely Allah is All-Seeing of all His servants.” This ending shows a man who has said everything he could and now releases the result itself, rather than continuing to press or plead beyond what he had already delivered.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Ghafer 40:38-44 records the believer’s full closing sermon, contrasting his call to salvation with his people’s call to the Fire, exposing their idols’ powerlessness, and entrusting his affairs entirely to Allah. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Ghafer.
