How Did Ibrahim Handle His Father’s Rejection?
The first stance: Ibrahim was lenient with his father in his call to Allah. Using the word “father” indicates a kind of mercy toward the person addressed. He reasoned with him and showed him logical arguments: “O dear father! Why do you worship what can neither hear nor see, nor benefit you at all?” He showed his fear for his father: “O dear father! I truly fear that you will be touched by a torment from the Most Compassionate.” He told his father gently that he was not speaking out of ignorance, but from knowledge given by Allah: “O dear father! I have certainly received some knowledge which you have not received, so follow me and I will guide you to the Straight Path.” And he showed him the danger of not worshipping Allah, since it places a person at risk of worshipping Satan instead: “Do not worship Satan. Surely Satan is ever rebellious against the Most Compassionate.” The second stance: when his father rejected Ibrahim’s call and asked him to leave, Ibrahim replied, “Abraham responded, ‘Peace be upon you,'” meaning you will not be harmed by me. “I will pray to my Lord for your forgiveness,” meeting great harm with great goodness, meaning he would ask Allah to forgive his father and guide him to faith and monotheism so that he might repent and be forgiven.
1. Four Distinct Arguments, All Gentle |
Before any tension entered the conversation, Ibrahim laid out four separate points: the uselessness of idols that cannot hear or see, his sincere fear for his father’s fate, his own credibility through knowledge from Allah, and the specific danger of falling under Satan’s influence. Each argument built logically on the last, showing a structured, patient case rather than a single emotional appeal.
2. Peace Offered in Return for a Threat |
Even after his father threatened to stone him and ordered him away, covered in Who Was the First Person Ibrahim Called to the Religion of Allah?, Ibrahim’s response was “Peace be upon you,” a promise of safety rather than retaliation. This response is treated by scholars as a model for responding to hostility from those closest to us without abandoning kindness.
3. A Promise That Had Its Limits |
Ibrahim’s promise to seek forgiveness for his father was a promise, not a guarantee it would be granted; elsewhere in the Quran, Ibrahim is shown eventually disassociating from this prayer once it became clear his father would remain an enemy of Allah. His kindness in the moment did not mean unconditional endorsement of his father’s continued disbelief.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Maryam 19:42-45 records Ibrahim’s four-part reasoned appeal to his father, and Surah Maryam 19:47 records his measured response of peace and a promise of prayer after being rejected. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Maryam.
