How Did Allah Destroy the People of Aad?
Allah destroyed the people of Aad with a strong wind, described with several qualities. “And in the story of Aad was another lesson, when We sent against them the devastating wind” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:41), a devastating wind that held no benefit for them. “‘Ad ˹also˺ rejected ˹the truth˺. Then how ˹dreadful˺ were My punishment and warnings! Indeed, We sent against them a furious wind, on a day of unrelenting misery” (Surah Al-Qamar 54:18-19), a day of gloom that would continue for them until the Day of Judgment. “And as for Aad, they were destroyed by a furious, bitter wind” (Surah Al-Haqqah 69:6), a wind that was very cold and fierce. “Which Allah unleashed on them non-stop for seven nights and eight days” (Surah Al-Haqqah 69:7). It was sent against them for eight days (in the daytime), meaning it began in the daytime, and (seven nights), ending in the daytime of the eighth day; it blew non-stop until it destroyed the people.
1. One Wind, Described Four Different Ways |
Three separate surahs each add a different quality to the same wind: Surah Adh-Dhariyat calls it devastating and without benefit, Surah Al-Qamar calls it furious and tied to an unrelenting day, and Surah Al-Haqqah calls it bitterly cold and specifies its exact duration. Together they build a fuller picture than any single description could give alone.
2. A Precise Duration, Not a Sudden Instant |
Unlike Thamud’s single instantaneous shout, covered in How Was Thamud Destroyed for Disobeying Allah’s Command?, Aad’s punishment stretched across seven nights and eight days without pause. This extended, relentless quality matches the calamity’s description as continuing for them “until the Day of Judgment,” a punishment whose severity was measured in duration as much as force.
3. The Very Element That Exposed Their Weakness |
Aad, famous for their strength and their imposing buildings, covered in What Strength Did the People of Aad Have?, were ultimately destroyed by something as intangible as wind. Their most solid physical achievements offered no defense whatsoever against Allah’s decree.
Scholarly Insight: Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:41, Surah Al-Qamar 54:19, and Surah Al-Haqqah 69:6-7 together describe the furious, bitterly cold wind that destroyed Aad over seven nights and eight days. Read the fuller context in the tafsir of Surah Al-Haqqah.
