How does a Muslim handle news he hears from unreliable sources?
In the age of rapid information, protecting the honor and reputation of individuals is a paramount Islamic duty. When a Muslim hears news about his Muslim brothers, relatives, or any other people, there are crucial guidelines they must follow before making any judgments or passing the information along.
1. Avoiding Suspicion |
First, no one should talk about his Muslim brother, accusing him of something, smearing his reputation, and discrediting him. Jumping to negative conclusions based on rumors is a destructive habit.
As Allah Almighty says: (O believers! Avoid many suspicions, for indeed, some suspicions are sinful. And do not spy.) Surah Al Hujurat.
2. The Prohibition of Gossip |
Second, anyone who accuses another person of a flaw, or indecency committed, should not talk about him or gossip about him to others. Circulating unverified accusations is considered a major sin that Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful, except in very specific legal situations where one is allowed to talk to authorities or judges to prevent harm.
3. Verifying the News |
Third, whomsoever makes an accusation about a Muslim simply to gossip, then his word should not be taken as true unless one validates it. Blindly accepting and acting upon news from untrustworthy people leads to social disasters.
Almighty Allah clearly commanded: (O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify it so you do not harm people unknowingly, becoming regretful for what you have done.) Surah Al Hujurat 49: 6.
Scholarly Insight: Sheikh Othaimeen said: "If someone talks to you about a person in an evil way, then you have to validate what was said because there are people who are in a hurry to repeat what was said without proof, other people who like to see hostility and hatred among Muslims, and people who are enemies of a particular person who would like to see him fail and ruin his reputation so that people avoid him."
