Which is better: to give charity publicly or secretly?
Islam provides a nuanced approach to charity, focusing heavily on the purity of the believer's intention.
Secret vs. Public Charity |
1. The Permissibility of Both
It is permissible to give charity both secretly or in public. (To give charity publicly is good, but to give to the poor privately is better for you, and will absolve you of your sins.) Al-Baqara 2:271.
2. The Superiority of Secret Charity
Being discreet about giving to charity is better than doing it publicly because that will ensure that the intention is pure and that boasting about it is not the intention. "There are seven whom Allah will shade with His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His", and he mentioned "a man who gives in charity and conceals it to an extent that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives." (Agreed upon, narrated by al-Bukhaari, no. 620; Muslim, no. 1712; and others).
3. The Exception for Public Charity
There is an exception: when there is a benefit to giving charity publicly, which is to encourage other people to do the same; then in that case, giving it publicly is better. So the good intentions the person has when he gives his charity in public make it better to do so, making sure that the intentions are not tainted by Satan's whispering and taking care about not showing off so that the reward for the good deed is not diminished or nullified.
Scholarly Insight: In Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh), scholars differentiate between obligatory charity (Zakat) and voluntary charity (Sadaqah). It is generally recommended to give the obligatory Zakat openly to demonstrate obedience to Allah and to prevent false accusations of negligence from the community. Conversely, voluntary Sadaqah is best given in absolute secrecy to train the soul in sincerity (Ikhlas) and to protect the recipient from public embarrassment. However, if a respected community figure gives voluntary charity openly during a fundraiser specifically to motivate others, the scholars rule that this public act becomes superior, provided the donor strictly guards their heart against arrogance and showing off (Riya).
Frequently Asked Questions |
Why is giving charity in secret considered better?
Secret charity is considered better because it completely eliminates the risk of showing off (Riya), ensures the intention is purely for Allah, and preserves the dignity and self-respect of the person receiving the help.
What is the reward for a person who gives charity in absolute secrecy?
According to an authentic Hadith, a person who hides their charity so well that "their left hand does not know what their right hand gives" is among the seven types of people whom Allah will shade on the Day of Judgment.
When is it better to give charity publicly?
It is better to give publicly when there is a clear, overriding benefit, such as inspiring and encouraging others in the community to donate as well, provided the donor guards their heart against pride and showing off.
