Why Does Allah Not Decree Guidance for All His Creation?
أخبرنا الله تعالى في كتابه "ولو شاء لهداكم أجمعين" فلم لم يكتب الله الهداية للخلق جميعا؟
Why does Allah not decree guidance to all His creations? And what are the two types of guidance?
In Islamic theology, guidance is divided into two distinct categories. The first is the "Guidance of Leading," which Allah provides to all humanity through prophets and scripture. The second is the "Guidance of Success" (Tawfeeq), which is Allah's specific divine help granted only to those who sincerely intend and choose to be guided.
Allah the Almighty says: (But We have made it a light, by which We guide whoever We will of Our servants. And you are truly leading all to the Straight Path) [Ash-Shoura 42: 52]. This raises an important question regarding the difference between the guidance of Allah Almighty and the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
What is the "Guidance of Leading"?
It is the universal guidance where Allah shows humanity the path of good and righteousness by sending Messengers and revealing Divine Books, giving people the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.
What is the "Guidance of Success" (Tawfeeq)?
It is the specific divine help and enablement from Allah that allows a person to actually follow the truth and obey Him. This is granted only to those who sincerely intend and choose to be guided.
Can the Prophet force someone to be guided?
No, the Prophet can only offer the Guidance of Leading by showing people the straight path. The actual Guidance of Success rests solely with Allah, as He guides whoever He wills based on His profound wisdom.
The Two Types of Guidance
1. The Guidance of Leading (Dalalah and Irshad)
This is manifested when Allah has guided His creations to good and righteousness through sending the Messengers and revealing the Divine Books. This type of guidance is meant for all creations. Allah the Almighty has given reason to man, so that he would be able to know with it good and evil.
(and shown them the two ways of right and wrong?) [Al-Balad 90: 10]
(We already showed them the Way, whether they choose to be grateful or ungrateful.) [Al-Insan 76: 3]
2. The Guidance of Success (Tawfeeq)
This is the guidance accompanied with Allah's Tawfeeq (the ability to achieve something successfully). It is when Allah the Almighty helps those who intend to be guided to obey Him.
(You surely cannot guide whoever you like O Prophet, but it is Allah Who guides whoever He wills, and He knows best who are fit to be guided.) [Al-Qasas 28: 56]
The Core Difference
The first type of guidance is given by Allah to all creations, while the second type depends on Allah’s Wisdom: He guides whom He wills by His wisdom, granting it to those who sincerely seek to be guided.
Scholarly Insight: Islamic scholars of Aqeedah (Creed) explain that if Allah forced everyone to be guided through Tawfeeq (divine enablement), the concept of human free will and the ultimate test of worldly life would be rendered completely meaningless. By sending the Prophets to provide the "Guidance of Leading," Allah establishes His clear proof upon mankind. The Prophets can only point out the straight path, but they cannot force faith into people's hearts. The ultimate realization of true faith requires a person's sincere effort and intention, which Allah then perfectly rewards with the "Guidance of Success."
لماذا لم يكتب الله الهداية للخلق جميعاً، وما هما نوعا الهداية؟
في العقيدة الإسلامية، تنقسم الهداية إلى نوعين. الأول "هداية الدلالة والإرشاد" وهي عامة لجميع الخلق عن طريق الرسل والكتب. والثاني "هداية التوفيق" وهي إعانة إلهية خاصة يمنحها الله لمن يصدق النية ويختار طريق الهداية.
قال تعالى: (وَلَٰكِن جَعَلْنَاهُ نُورًا نَّهْدِي بِهِ مَن نَّشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِي إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ) [الشورى 42: 52]. ما الفرق بين هداية الله عز وجل (نهدي به من نشاء) وهداية النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم (وإنك لتهدي)؟
نوعا الهداية
1. هداية دلالة وإرشاد
أي أن الله عز وجل أرشد عباده للخير والإصلاح عن طريق إرسال الرسل وإنزال الكتب. وهذه الهداية للخلق جميعا، وقد أودع فيهم العقل الذي يمكنهم من تمييز الخير من الشر به.
(وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ) [البلد 90: 10]
(إِنَّا هَدَيْنَاهُ السَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا) [الإنسان 76: 3]
2. هداية توفيق
أي أنه سبحانه وتعالى يوفق من شاء من عباده إلى طاعته كما قال تعالى:
(إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّـهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ) [القصص 28: 56]
الفرق الجوهري
فالنوع الأول من الهداية قد أعطاه الله للخلق جميعا. أما النوع الثاني فهو مرتبط بحكمته سبحانه وتعالى فهو يهدي من يشاء بحكمته ويضل من يشاء بحكمته.
1. General Guidance: Direction and Proof (Hidayat ad-Dilalah) | هداية الدلالة والإرشاد: الحجة البالغة العامة لكل البشر
Allah did not leave any human community in darkness; He provided general guidance to all mankind through innate moral conscience (Fitrah), human intellect, the signs in creation, and the sending of messengers with clear scriptures: "And as for Thamud, We guided them [showed them the path], but they preferred blindness over guidance" (41:17).
وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمَىٰ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ (سورة فصلت: 17)
أقام الله الحجة البالغة على سائر خلقه بهداية الدلالة والبيان؛ فركب فيهم العقول، وأودع فيهم الفطرة، وبث في الآفاق دلائل توحيده، وأرسل الرسل مبشرين ومنذرين؛ كما قال عن ثمود: {وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيْنَاهُمْ فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمَىٰ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ}؛ فبين لهم طريق النجاة.
2. Enabling Heart Guidance: Divine Favor (Hidayat at-Tawfiq) | هداية التوفيق والإلهام: فضل الله الخاص بمن أقبل بقلبه
The second category is the internal illumination and opening of the heart to embrace and love faith. This is an exclusive divine prerogative that no prophet can bestow: "Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided" (28:56). Allah grants this enabling grace to those who genuinely seek truth.
إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ اللَّـهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ (سورة القصص: 56)
هي شرح الصدر لقبول الإيمان والتثبيت عليه، وهذه خاصة بالله وحده لا يقدر عليها ملك ولا نبي؛ خاطب الله نبيه قائلاً: {إِنَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ اللَّـهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ}؛ فهو سبحانه أعلم بالقلوب المؤهلة للهداية فضلاً منه وإحساناً.
3. Why Did Allah Not Compel All Creation to Believe? | الحكمة من عدم إجبار الخلق جميعاً على الإيمان القسري
If Allah had willed, He could have created all humanity programmed like angels or coerced them into faith by irresistible force: "Had He willed, He would have guided you all" (6:149). But compelling belief would nullify the very purpose of human creation: moral testing, free choice, and earning divine honor through deliberate love and sacrifice.
قُلْ فَلِلَّـهِ الْحُجَّةُ الْبَالِغَةُ ۖ فَلَوْ شَاءَ لَهَدَاكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ (سورة الأنعام: 149)
لو شاء الله لجعل الناس كلهم مؤمنين جبراً كما جعل الملائكة مفطورين على الطاعة: {قُلْ فَلِلَّـهِ الْحُجَّةُ الْبَالِغَةُ ۖ فَلَوْ شَاءَ لَهَدَاكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ}؛ ولكن القسر والإلجاء يتنافى مع حكمة الابتلاء والاختيار الذي خلق الإنسان من أجله، ولا قيمة لفضيلة يُجبر صاحبها عليها.
4. Divine Law: Sincerity Unlocks Guidance, Arrogance Blocks It | سنة الله: من تقرب إلى الله هداه، ومن أعرض أضله بعدله
Allah guides those who strive toward Him: "And those who strive for Us, We will surely guide them to Our ways" (29:69). Conversely, those who actively choose arrogance, turn away from clear proofs, and persist in tyranny are deprived of enabling guidance by divine justice: "Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people" (5:51).
وَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا (سورة العنكبوت: 69)
أقام الله أمره على العدل والفضل: فمن أقبل على الله بصدق ونية طيبة وفقه وزاده هدى: {وَالَّذِينَ اهْتَدَوْا زَادَهُمْ هُدًى وَآتَاهُمْ تَقْوَاهُمْ}، ومن اختار الكبر والإعراض والفسوق حرمه الله من توفيقه بعدله: {فَلَمَّا زَاغُوا أَزَاغَ اللَّـهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ ۚ وَاللَّـهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِقِينَ}.
