The Most Beautiful Names of Allah: الرَّؤُوفُ Ar-Ra’oof (The Most Kind)

The Compassionate. The One who is extremely compassionate.

He is The One whose mercy will endow whoever he willed among His creatures. Whatever Allah (The Almighty) سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ decrees is done with perfect judgment, and He is never harsh or unjust in His rulings.

In the Qur'an, this name is often mentioned in pairs with the names of His mercy. So, if we take the name Ar-Raheem (The Bestower of Mercy), the distinction between the names "Ar-Raoof (The Most Kind)" and "Ar-Raheem (The Bestower of Mercy)" is insightful and highlights the nuances of Allah (The Almighty)'s attributes as portrayed in the Qur'an.

"Ar-Raoof (The Most Kind)," often translated as "The All-Pitying" or "The Compassionate," indeed emphasizes a deep sense of empathy and concern for His creation. Imam Al-Ghazali's explanation of pity as an intensification of mercy provides further depth to this understanding, emphasizing the tender and compassionate nature of Allah (The Almighty)'s care for His servants.

On the other hand, "Ar-Raheem (The Bestower of Mercy)" signifies Allah (The Almighty)'s continuous and abundant mercy, which is manifested particularly after calamities or during times of need. While both names convey Allah (The Almighty)'s compassion and mercy, "Ar-Raoof (The Most Kind)" is associated with preemptive care and protection, whereas "Ar-Raheem (The Bestower of Mercy)" emphasizes the ongoing and enduring nature of His mercy, especially in times of trial or difficulty.

Understanding these distinctions allows us to develop a more comprehensive appreciation of Allah (The Almighty)'s attributes and His relationship with His creation. It reminds us of His constant care and concern for us, both in times of ease and adversity, and encourages us to turn to Him with trust and reliance in all circumstances.

Evidence from the Quran

(Indeed, Allah (The Almighty) is, to the people, Kind and Ar-Raheem (The Bestower of Mercy).) Al-Hajj 22:65
(إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ‎) [الحج 22:65]

(And those who followed will say when they see the punishment, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could be among the believers.") Ash-Shu'ara 26:102
(وَرَءَاهُ الَّذِينَ مِن دُونِهِمْ لَمَّا رَءَوْا الْعَذَابَ قَالُوا لَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ) [الشعراء 26:102]

(So by mercy from Allah (The Almighty), [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah (The Almighty). Indeed, Allah (The Almighty) loves those who rely [upon Him].) Aal-E-Imran 3:159
