Surah Ash-Sharh, also known as Al-Inshirah, is the 94th chapter of the Quran, containing 8 verses. Revealed in Makkah as a continuation of the comfort offered to the Prophet, it reminds him that Allah expanded his breast, relieved him of the burden that weighed upon his back, and raised his remembrance high among mankind. The surah affirms, in a repeated and much-loved refrain, that with hardship comes ease, and closes by commanding him that once free from one task he should turn in devotion and strive toward his Lord. Below you can read the full Surah Ash-Sharh in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ }

Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 1
1. We expanded your chest with guidance and faith and removed you from the confusion that was disturbing you as a result of the stubbornness of your people and their arrogant refusal to follow the truth. You were searching for a means to save them from what they were in, and you were guided to it.
{ وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ }

Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 2
2. And We removed from your shoulders the burden of the Message which you carried, by supporting you and facilitating your task.
{ ٱلَّذِيۤ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ }

Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 3
3. This burden on your back was too heavy. Therefore We made the task of conveying the Message an easy one for you. You then carried it out with a satisfied peaceful soul even though people opposed you.
{ وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ }

Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 4
4. We gave you a distinguished status and an exalted rank, and what higher standing is there than the prophecy that Allah Almighty granted you? What higher esteem is there than that you should be mentioned after Me in every attestation to My Oneness (to say, that is: I testify that there is no deity but Allah, and that Mohammad is the Messenger of Allah ).
{ فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْراً }
Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 5
5. With every distress comes relief, and in all difficulties there is a way out if man is armed with patience and relies on Allah .
{ إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْراً }
Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 6
6. Allah Almighty then emphasizes that relief comes in all adversities if man confronts them with patience and takes the necessary measures to relieve them.
{ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ }

Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 7
7. When you are at leisure from the matters of this life and its preoccupations, devote yourself to the worship of Your Lord energetically, with your thoughts free from the cares of the world. Give yourself wholly to Him and be sincere in your worship.
{ وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَبْ }

Surah Ash-Sharh: Verse 8
8. Do not seek a reward for your deeds except from Allah Alone. It is to Him that one should turn humbly in prayer.
