In the Name of Almighty Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate

Surah Al-Qiyamah is the 75th chapter of the Quran, containing 40 verses. Revealed in Makkah, it takes its name from the Day of Resurrection, by which Allah swears an oath at its opening alongside the self-reproaching soul, affirming His power to reassemble even the very fingertips of the dead. The surah describes the terror of that Day, when the eye will be fixed in fear and the sun and moon brought together, rebukes man’s haste and denial, portrays the agony of the soul at the moment of death, and closes by pointing to man’s own creation from a drop of fluid as proof that the One who created him is able to bring him back to life. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Qiyamah in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ لاَ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ }
{ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 1
1. Allah Almighty swears by the Day of Resurrection and the terrible events that take place on that day.
{ وَلاَ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 2
2. Allah Almighty swears by the soul that aspires to noble matters and repents for committing any ill-deeds, and for not increasing its righteous deeds; it forever reproaches itself for what it may have done or left undone.
{ أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلإِنسَانُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ }
{ ٱلإِنسَانُ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 3
3. Does the son of Adam think that Allah is incapable of raising him from his grave and gathering his bones after they had turned to dust and become scattered in the earth?
{ بَلَىٰ قَادِرِينَ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ }
{ قَادِرِينَ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 4
4. Yes, indeed! Allah Almighty is capable of doing that; He is capable of putting together man’s fingertips and placing them in their correct place in the body as they were before. The tips of the fingers are the most delicate bones in a human body; thus, if Almighty Allah is capable of putting those together and placing them in their correct position, He is then capable of placing other bones in their right places in the body.
{ بَلْ يُرِيدُ ٱلإِنسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ }
{ ٱلإِنسَانُ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 5
5. The son of Adam should know that Allah is able to gather his bones and to shape his fingertips. However, he wants to continue in his disobedience, and nothing can stop him from his depravity. He says: “I will do that; then I will repent before Resurrection Day.”
{ يَسْأَلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ }
{ يَسْأَلُ } { ٱلْقِيَامَةِ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 6
6. He asks skeptically and disapprovingly: “When is Resurrection Day?” And, when man denies the resurrection and judgement, then nothing can stop him from sinning.
{ فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلْبَصَرُ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 7
7. Allah Almighty mentions three signs of that day: When the sight is dazed with fear and surprise. Man no longer blinks as a result of the fear and terrors he witnesses.
{ وَخَسَفَ ٱلْقَمَرُ }
Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 8
8. The second sign is: When the moon becomes eclipsed and its light disappears.
{ وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ }
Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 9
9. The third sign is: When the sun and moon meet on the same horizon. They will both rise in the west, dark without any light.
{ يَقُولُ ٱلإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ }
{ ٱلإِنسَانُ } { يَوْمَئِذٍ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 10
10. When these three signs appear, it is then the Day of Resurrection. Man will say: “Where is the refuge from Hell? Is there no escape?”
{ كَلاَّ لاَ وَزَرَ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 11
11. In answer to man’s queries as to escape and refuge, Almighty Allah says: “There is neither escape nor refuge from the terrors of that Day. Nothing will protect man from the judgement of Allah Almighty.”
{ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ }
{ يَوْمَئِذٍ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 12
12. To Almighty Allah Alone is the return, either to Heaven or to Hell.
{ يُنَبَّأُ ٱلإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ }
{ يُنَبَّأُ } { ٱلإِنسَانُ } { يَوْمَئِذٍ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 13
13. On that day, man will be informed of all his deeds in life on earth, both great and small.
{ بَلِ ٱلإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ }
{ ٱلإِنسَانُ }

{ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 16
16. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) received the revelation, he was careful to learn it by heart, thus he would race ahead of the revelation in reciting what was read to him so as to memorize it and not lose any of it. Therefore, Allah Almighty commanded him to listen to the revelation brought by Gabriel. Allah guarantees to His noble Messenger that He will facilitate for him its memorization and performance and that He will explain and clarify it.

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 20
20. No, indeed! The matter is not as you, O polytheists, say, notably that you will not be resuscitated on the Day of Resurrection for judgement and retribution. What led you to your belief is your love for the ephemeral life on earth, and the preference of your desires and pleasures in it.

{ ٱلآخِرَةَ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 31

{ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 34
34. Allah Almighty threatens this unbeliever who swaggers about and tells him mockingly: “You deserve to strut about for you have disbelieved in Allah, your Lord!”
{ ثُمَّ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 35
35. Almighty Allah repeats his threat to and ridicule of this swaggering arrogant sinner. (It was said that the Messenger of Allah clutched at the clothes of Abu Jahl and recited this verse and the preceding one to him. The enemy of Allah told him: “Do you threaten me, O Mohammad? By Allah! Neither you nor your Lord can do anything to me for I am the proudest to walk between the two mounts (of Makkah).”)
{ أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلإِنسَانُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى }
{ ٱلإِنسَانُ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 36
36. Does this person who denies the Resurrection think that Allah has created him without a purpose, that He will leave him to do as he wishes in life and that he will not be commanded to carry out an order or forbidden to perform a prohibition? Or that he will not be resurrected and called to account? No indeed! He will not be allowed to wander in vain. He will be resurrected, and he will give account for all his actions.
{ أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّن مَّنِيٍّ يُمْنَىٰ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 37
37. Allah Almighty reminds man that He created him from a weak sperm which a man ejaculates into the womb of a woman. Thus, He who initiated the creation of man can recreate him, because repetition is easier than initiation..
{ ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 38
38. Then Allah made the sperm into a blood clot and proceeded in its creation until man was formed and became a fully-developed infant.
{ فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلأُنثَىٰ }
Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 39
39. Almighty Allah made the new-borns male and female so that life on earth could continue through the intermarriage between males and females.
{ أَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يُحْيِـيَ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ }
{ بِقَادِرٍ }

Surah Al-Qiyamah: Verse 40
40. Is not He Who created this being from a weak sperm able to recreate man and to resurrect the dead? Although repetition is easier than initiation?
