Surah Al-Mumtahanah is the 60th chapter of the Quran, containing 13 verses. Revealed in Madinah, it takes its name from the examination of women who emigrated to the believers, testing the sincerity of their faith. The surah warns against taking the enemies of the faith as allies, sets out the example of Abraham in disowning disbelief, and lays down principles for how believers should relate to non-believers who do not fight them because of their religion. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Mumtahanah in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

{يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَتَّخِذُواْ عَدُوِّي وَعَدُوَّكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَ تُلْقُونَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُواْ بِمَا جَآءَكُمْ مِّنَ ٱلْحَقِّ يُخْرِجُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَإِيَّاكُمْ أَن تُؤْمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَاداً فِي سَبِيلِي وَٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِي تُسِرُّونَ إِلَيْهِمْ بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَاْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَآ أَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَآ أَعْلَنتُمْ وَمَن يَفْعَلْهُ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ}
{يٰأَيُّهَا} {آمَنُواْ} {جِهَاداً}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 1
1. This verse was revealed in connection with Hatib ibn abi Balta’a who was one the fighters at the battle of Badr. He was not from the tribe of Quraish. He had emigrated from Makkah leaving behind him his wealth and son. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) wanted to conquer Makkah, he asked Allah, his Lord, to conceal the information from Quraish so that he may take them by surprise. But Hatib wrote a letter to Quraish, informing them of the Messenger’s intention, and asking for their friendship. He sent the letter with a woman. But Allah Almighty informed His Messenger of this letter, and he in turn sent out Ali and Zubair to intercept the woman in the meadow of Khakh and get the letter. Having found her there, they asked her to hand the letter over to them, but she denied having it. They threatened to strip her in order to search her. She then gave them the letter which she had hidden in her braided hair. The Prophet then asked Hatib about the letter which he confessed to writing, and he said that he did not write it out of disbelief or abjuration of Islam but to gain the friendship of Quraish in order to ensure protection for his child, family and wealth which he had left behind in Makkah. The Prophet told his companions: “He speaks the truth!” Omar ibn al-Khattab asked for permission to decapitate the hypocrite, but the Prophet said: “He was at Badr, and who knows, maybe Allah looked at the people of Badr and said: ‘Do as you please for I have forgiven you!’”
Allah Almighty commands the believers in this verse not to take the unbelievers as aids or allies to them by telling them news concerning the Messenger, which enemies should not know about. Those unbelievers have disbelieved in Allah, His Messengers and His Book, so how could you take them as helpers, confiding in them and giving them information that could help them harm the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Muslim believers? They expelled the Prophet and his companions for no other fault than that they believed in Allah alone and worshipped Him sincerely. If you believers went to battle in My cause, seeking My satisfaction, then do not consider My enemies as your close friends. He who takes them as allies and reveals information concerning the Prophet to them, has strayed from the path that leads to Paradise.
{إِن يَثْقَفُوكُمْ يَكُونُواْ لَكُمْ أَعْدَآءً وَيَبْسُطُوۤاْ إِلَيْكُمْ أَيْدِيَهُمْ وَأَلْسِنَتَهُمْ بِٱلسُّوۤءِ وَوَدُّواْ لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 2
2. If the unbelievers to whom you show friendship seize you, they will reveal their enmity and harm you with their hands and tongues: they will fight you, insult you, and wish that you would disbelieve in your Lord so that you could be like them. How then can you show them friendliness?
{لَن تَنفَعَكُمْ أَرْحَامُكُمْ وَلاَ أَوْلاَدُكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ}
{أَوْلاَدُكُمْ} {ٱلْقِيَامَةِ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 3
3. Allah Almighty answers the one who wanted, through his treachery, to protect his children and wealth and says: “Relations and children for whom you take the unbelievers as allies, will not benefit you on the Day of Judgement. They will not repel Allah’s punishment which you will deserve if you disobey Him on earth. For on that critical day, He will separate between you and your relations. Each will have enough concerns to occupy him. Allah is knowledgeable of all that His servants do.”
{قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ فِيۤ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُ إِذْ قَالُواْ لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَءآؤُاْ مِّنْكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْعَدَاوَةُ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءُ أَبَداً حَتَّىٰ تُؤْمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ إِلاَّ قَوْلَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لأَبِيهِ لأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَيْءٍ رَّبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 4
4. Those who side with the unbelievers, do they not take their father Abraham and his believing companions as their example? For they told their people who disbelieved in Allah: “We disavow you and the gods and peers that you worship instead of Allah, and we reject your disbelief and the idols of stone and the statues that you worship instead of Allah. We declare war upon you, so there will be no forbearance between you and us, until you believe in Allah and in His Oneness, and you worship Him Alone without partner, spouse or child, and you abandon the worship of idols and statues.” Abraham (peace be upon him), your forefather, and his people, are a good example for you to follow in your behaviour and worship. Do not exclude from Abraham’s behaviour, by which you should be guided, but that he asked forgiveness for his father who remained an unbeliever. For Abraham told his father that he would seek Allah’s forgiveness for him, but that he could not help him more than that. The matter was entirely up to Allah’s will whether to forgive or punish him. But Abraham only said this after his father had promised him to believe in Allah and follow him in his belief. However, when it became clear to Abraham that his father was an enemy of Allah, he disassociated himself from him. When Abraham and the believers left their people, they turned humbly to Allah and said: “Our Lord, we depend on You in all our affairs and we return to You in repentance for all our sins. To You is our return when You raise us from our graves for judgement.” Therefore, you believers! Take them as your example and say as they said.
{رَبَّنَا لاَ تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 5
5. Our Lord, do not turn the unbelievers among our people against us and do not let them lure us away from our religion by torturing us. They believe that they are able to dominate us because they are right in what they say and in what they worship. Our Lord, conceal our sins from others, forgive us in all matters relating to You and us, for You are Exalted in Might, Invincible and Wise in what You rule and determine.
{لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِيهِمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلآخِرَ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْغَنِيُّ ٱلْحَمِيدُ}
{يَرْجُو}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 6
6. In Abraham and the believers among his people there is a good example for you to turn to for those who wish to encounter Allah on Judgement Day and hope for a reward from Him and a salvation from His punishment. But he who turns away from what Allah calls him to, notably the belief in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers and the Day of Judgement, and is arrogant and supports the enemies of Allah, he will only harm himself, for Allah is not in need of him, his faith or submission. He is deserving of thanks for all His Blessings and favours to His creatures.
{عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ ٱلَّذِينَ عَادَيْتُم مِّنْهُم مَّوَدَّةً وَٱللَّهُ قَدِيرٌ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ}
Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 7
7. Allah Almighty told the believers to console them, that He may plant the love of Islam in the hearts of their family and close relations who are unbelievers. Thus, friendliness and cordiality will reign between them and those whom they had opposed and boycotted for the sake of their religion. Allah is capable of doing what He wills. He is All-Forgiving of those who repent. He is Merciful and does not punish them for their misdeeds after He has forgiven them.
{لاَّ يَنْهَاكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِّن دِيَارِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوۤاْ إِلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ}
{يَنْهَاكُمُ} {يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ} {دِيَارِكُمْ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 8
8. Allah Almighty does not prevent you from being kind to the unbelievers who do not declare war against you, or expel you from your homes, or help those who expel you. Nor does He prevent you from being generous to them and keeping good relations with them, because Allah likes those who do good deeds and preserve relationships with others. (The reason for the revelation of this verse is as follows: Kutayla, mother of Asma’a bint abi Bakr al-Siddik, who was a polytheist, came to her daughter Asma’a carrying gifts. Asma’a refused her gifts and would not let her into her house. Asma’a then went to her sister Aisha to ask for her advice in the matter. Aisha, in turn, asked the Messenger of Allah. Thus Allah Almighty revealed this verse. The Messenger (peace be upon him) then commanded her to let her mother into her house and accept her gifts.
{إِنَّمَا يَنْهَاكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ قَاتَلُوكُمْ فِي ٱلدِّينِ وَأَخْرَجُوكُم مِّن دِيَارِكُمْ وَظَاهَرُواْ عَلَىٰ إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَن تَوَلَّوْهُمْ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُمْ فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّالِمُونَ}
{يَنْهَاكُمُ} {قَاتَلُوكُمْ} {دِيَارِكُمْ} {ظَاهَرُواْ} {فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ} {ٱلظَّالِمُونَ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 9
9. Allah prohibits you from taking as your friends, the unbelievers who declared their animosity towards you, fought you, drove you out of your land and homes, and helped to drive you out. Allah forbids you from supporting them or considering them as helpers and He commands you to treat them as your enemies. Allah Almighty yet again warns the believers against taking them as supporters and says: “Those who consider the unbelievers as supporters have wronged themselves for they have violated Allah’s commands and considered His enemies and their enemies as allies.”
{يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِذَا جَآءَكُمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتُ مُهَاجِرَاتٍ فَٱمْتَحِنُوهُنَّ ٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِإِيمَانِهِنَّ فَإِنْ عَلِمْتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤْمِنَاتٍ فَلاَ تَرْجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ لاَ هُنَّ حِلٌّ لَّهُمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّ وَآتُوهُم مَّآ أَنفَقُواْ وَلاَ جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ إِذَآ آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ وَلاَ تُمْسِكُواْ بِعِصَمِ ٱلْكَوَافِرِ وَاسْأَلُواْ مَآ أَنفَقْتُمْ وَلْيَسْأَلُواْ مَآ أَنفَقُواْ ذَلِكُمْ حُكْمُ ٱللَّهِ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ}
{يٰأَيُّهَا} {آمَنُواْ} {ٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتُ} {مُهَاجِرَاتٍ} {بِإِيمَانِهِنَّ} {مُؤْمِنَاتٍ} {وَآتُوهُم} {آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ} {وَاسْأَلُواْ} {وَلْيَسْأَلُواْ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 10
10. Among the conditions for the truce of Hudaybiya between the Messenger of Allah and Quraish was that the Messenger should send back all the unbelievers of Quraish even if they had embraced Islam. During that period Umm Kulthoum bint Ukba bin abi Mui’it came to the prophet in Medina to embrace Islam. Her two brothers came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) asking him to turn her over to them. Allah Almighty revealed this verse thus revoking the peace treaty of Hudaybiya in matters concerning women. Allah forbade the believers to return the refugee women back to the polytheists, and revealed this verse of “The Trial”. He says: “O you believers! If any believing woman among the emigrants should come to you, put her through a trial to know the veracity of her faith, because the unbelievers are unlawful in marriage to believing women and the believing women are unlawful to unbelieving men.” The Messenger of Allah would say to the emigrant women: “Say: ‘By Allah, the One and Only, I did not leave my husband out of hatred. By Allah, I did not leave preferring one land to another, or for the pleasures of this life. I left only for the love of Allah and His Messenger.’” Allah then says that He knows better the faith of the emigrants than do the believers. He then gives His judgement in this case and says: “Give the non-believing husbands, whose believing wives have immigrated, the same amount of dowry that they have paid. The believing men are then permitted to marry them, as long as they agree to pay their dowry. The believing men are not permitted to marry polytheist women, nor retain the marital ties which united them to the unbelieving women who remained in the land of polytheism. If a non-believing wife of a Muslim leaves him to join the unbelievers — after the revelation of this verse — the believers are entitled to request from the unbelievers the dowry which her husband had paid her. At the same time, the non-believing husbands may ask for the dowry of their believing wives who have left them.” This is Allah’s judgement by which He judges among you. Follow it therefore! He is Omniscient and Wise in His laws.
{وَإِن فَاتَكُمْ شَيْءٌ مِّنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ فَعَاقَبْتُمْ فَآتُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ذَهَبَتْ أَزْوَاجُهُمْ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنفَقُواْ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِيۤ أَنتُمْ بِهِ مُؤْمِنُونَ}
{أَزْوَاجِكُمْ} {فَآتُواْ} {أَزْوَاجُهُمْ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 11
11. If your non-believing wives go to the polytheists and they do not pay back the dowry which you have previously paid your wives, and if you then defeat the polytheists, give the believers whose non-believing wives have left them, the same amount of dowry that they have given her from the booty. Fear Allah whom you believe in, and perform your duties and follow His commands. (Kutada and Mujahed said: “If any non-believing wife of a Muslim runs away to join the unbelievers with whom there is no peace treaty, and they do not pay her husband any compensation, then, when a Muslim woman comes to you, do not pay her unbelieving husband anything unless the unbelievers pay to the Muslim husband of the woman who has left him for them his dues which he paid to her.” (Ibn Abbas said: “The equivalent of her dowry should be paid her husband from the spoils before they are divided into five portions.”)

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 12
12. O Prophet! If the believing women come to you to take the oath of fealty and swear to you not to associate in worship anything with Allah, be it an idol or a stone, and not to steal or commit adultery, or bury their daughters alive (as they used to do in the pre-Islamic period), and not to mendaciously attribute paternity of natural children to their lawful husbands, or to disobey you in any commands or prohibitions that are honourable, such as to refrain from wailing and tearing their clothes, and not to be alone with a man whom they can marry, receive then their oath of fealty and promise them a reward if they are faithful to their engagement. Pray Allah to forgive their previous faults: Allah Almighty is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.
{يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ لاَ تَتَوَلَّوْاْ قوْماً غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ قَدْ يَئِسُواْ مِنَ ٱلآخِرَةِ كَمَا يَئِسَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ ٱلْقُبُورِ}
{يٰأَيُّهَا} {آمَنُواْ} {يَئِسُواْ} {أَصْحَابِ} {يَئِسَ}

Surah Al-Mumtahanah: Verse 13
13. After forbidding the believers from taking the polytheists as friends at the beginning of this chapter, Allah Almighty repeats his injunction and says: “O you believes! Do not turn in friendship to the Jews, Christians and polytheists, people against whom Allah is angry; they deserve to be cast out of His mercy. Do not take them as friends, revealing to them information that may harm the Muslims. The unbelievers have given up hope of all good and from deliverance in the Hereafter because of their obstinacy and their treating the Messenger of Allah as a liar. The unbelievers have despaired of the resurrection of the dead because they do not believe in the resurrection, or in the assembly and judgement.
