Surah Al-Muminun (The Believers) is the 23rd chapter of the Quran, comprising 118 verses. It takes its name from the opening verses which outline the essential qualities and habits of true believers who will attain ultimate success. The chapter details the miraculous stages of human creation, recounts the stories of past messengers such as Noah and Moses, and vividly contrasts the eternal triumph of the faithful with the profound regret of the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Muminun in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{قَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 1
1. Those who believe in Allah and His messengers have through their belief achieved victory and happiness.
{ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاَتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ}
{خَاشِعُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 2
2. Those who humble their hearts before Allah, and fear Him, have in this way discovered serenity, for devotion to prayer comes only to those who seek sanctuary in prayer, and allow it to pervade them, and prefer it to all other things, and so find in it peace and consolation.
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُّعْرِضُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 3
3. The believer is one who devotes himself to his work and turns away from the vanity of empty words and gestures, for Allah Almighty has described believers in this way: “.. and, passing beyond vanity, they nobly put it behind them;” that is to say, they do not linger there nor do they incline towards it (see chapter 25- Al-Furqan (The Criterion), 72).
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَـاةِ فَاعِلُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 4
4. The believer is one who purifies himself by giving the prescribed alms; this verse belongs to the Makkan period, that is it pre-dates the emigration of the Prophet (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Medina (the Hijra), whereas the giving of legal alms (zakat) was not imposed until the Muslims settled in Medina, and it is for that reason that some commentators think that the word zakat here means purifying the soul from all stain and idolatry. (Ibn Kathir interprets it to mean purifying the soul either spiritually or through paying the prescribed alms, which is in itself a way of purifying the soul.)
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ}
{حَافِظُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 5
5. Believers are those who control their sexuality – that is, they do not engage in forbidden acts and do not fornicate –
{إِلاَّ عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ}
{أَزْوَاجِهِمْ} {أَيْمَانُهُمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 6
6. and reserve it for their wives or their slaves, for he who has a sexual relationship with those permitted by Allah is blameless.
{فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ}
{فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 7
7. Those, therefore, who seek to have sexual relations with women who are forbidden to them are transgressors who are passing from the condoned to the illicit.
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ}
{لأَمَانَاتِهِمْ} {رَاعُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 8
8. Believers are those who respect any property entrusted to them, and who restore it to the owner, and who also honour their commitments and do not betray or act perfidiously, but on the contrary respect the property entrusted to them and their covenants.
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَوَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ}
{صَلَوَاتِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 9
9. Believers are those who honour prayer and worship, and practise them at the correct times and with devotion, so that their prayers may achieve the desired goal, which is the fear of Allah and the avoidance of shameful and indecent acts.
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْوَارِثُونَ}
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ} {ٱلْوَارِثُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 10
10. After having listed the praiseworthy attributes of true believers, Allah Almighty says that such people will inherit Paradise and will dwell there in the highest ranks, as a reward for all their good qualities.
The following appears in a Hadith (the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him)): “For each of you two places are reserved: one in hell and another in paradise, so that, if someone dies and goes to hell, the people in paradise will inherit his place in paradise, and that is the meaning of Allah’s statement, ‘They are the inheritors.’” (Reported by Ibn Hatem on behalf of Abi Houraira.)
{ٱلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ ٱلْفِرْدَوْسَ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ}
{خَالِدُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 11
11. These are the believers, the inheritors of the places of unbelievers in Paradise, where they will dwell forever. (The Prophet (peace be upon him) says: “If you wish Allah to grant you a place in Paradise, ask Him for the firdaus paradise, for you will find that it is in the middle and highest parts of Paradise, and it is from it that the rivers of paradise flow; also, the throne of the all-Merciful will be found just above it.”) (Reported by the Sahihain).
{وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلإِنْسَانَ مِن سُلاَلَةٍ مِّن طِينٍ}
{ٱلإِنْسَانَ} {سُلاَلَةٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 12
12. Allah Almighty tells us of the first creation of man; thus He says that He created Adam of an extraction of clay, that is He extracted him from clay, a proof of the power of Allah which must lead to believing in Him.
{ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَاهُ نُطْفَةً فِي قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ}
{جَعَلْنَاهُ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 13
13. Then Allah Almighty ordained that the descendants of Adam should originate in a drop of sperm from a weak stream of water which comes from the man’s loins and fixes itself in the woman’s uterus, so that the drop of sperm will remain during pregnancy in a secure and protected place until the time of birth, and the uterus is protected by the pelvic bone.
{ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا ٱلنُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْعَلَقَةَ مُضْغَةً فَخَلَقْنَا ٱلْمُضْغَةَ عِظَاماً فَكَسَوْنَا ٱلْعِظَامَ لَحْماً ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقاً آخَرَ فَتَبَارَكَ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ ٱلْخَالِقِينَ}
{عِظَاماً} {ٱلْعِظَامَ} {أَنشَأْنَاهُ} {آخَرَ} {ٱلْخَالِقِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 14
14. Then He made the sperm into a clot of blood; then from the clot of blood he made a small piece of flesh, and then He gave this piece of flesh the shape of a human being, so that one can see the head, the arms, the legs, and the facial features. And He created bones, then He covered them with flesh. When the child is born, He has created an entirely new creature. This creature hears, sees, makes noises, moves, and understands; it is quite different from its beginnings, but it has developed during its growth. Glory be to Allah, then, the best of creators! May Allah be sanctified above all beings.
{ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ بَعْدَ ذٰلِكَ لَمَيِّتُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 15
15. And then, after your initial creation from nothingness, mankind, you will inevitably die.
{ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ تُبْعَثُونَ}
{ٱلْقِيَامَةِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 16
16. Then, on Resurrection Day, He will re-create you, and will resurrect you and raise you from your graves in order to judge every creature according to his acts.
{وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعَ طَرَآئِقَ وَمَا كُنَّا عَنِ ٱلْخَلْقِ غَافِلِينَ}
{طَرَآئِقَ} {غَافِلِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 17
17. After having spoken of the creation of man, his death, and his resurrection, Allah Almighty now speaks of His power in creating so wonderfully the heavens and the earth. Thus He says that he has created, above us, seven paths; these seven paths are the seven heavens; in another verse, Allah says: “The seven heavens of earth and those who live in it, celebrate His glory!” (See chapter 17- Al-Isra (The Nocturnal Journey), 44). These seven paths lie above the earth and surround it, one after another or behind each other; Allah created them with wisdom and discretion, and has protected them with a secure law, so that they are well ordered and harmonious in their functions and orientations; and He has governed them by a single law, so that they mutually assist each other in accomplishing their roles. Allah does not remain inattentive to His creation of the heavens and the earth, and if He should neglect His creation, then all creation would lose its equilibrium.
{وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً بِقَدَرٍ فَأَسْكَنَّٰهُ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ ذَهَابٍ بِهِ لَقَٰدِرُونَ}
{فَأَسْكَنَّاهُ} {لَقَادِرُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 18
18. Almighty Allah says that He has caused water to descend from the sky, moderately, according to need, not too much, which would do harm to the earth and its prosperity, and not too little, for then it would not suffice to nourish the plants and fruits. Allah has ordained that the earth should make use of water to make plants and vegetables grow. If Allah so desires, He can forbid the rain to fall, and if He wishes He can send down rain upon sterile places where nothing grows, and if he chooses He can make the rain saline, in such a way that it will damage the earth and its vegetation; He can also, if He wishes, order the water to descend so low into the earth that nobody can locate it. But Allah, through His gentleness and compassion, has ordained that fresh rain should fall from the sky, and has placed it in the earth, from which He makes springs well up, and rivers, so that plants and fruits can be irrigated, and men can water their animals and use it also to purify themselves and keep clean. To Allah, therefore, be all thanks and appreciation.
{فَأَنشَأْنَا لَكُمْ بِهِ جَنَّاتٍ مِّن نَّخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَابٍ لَّكُمْ فِيهَا فَوَاكِهُ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ}
{جَنَّاتٍ} {وَأَعْنَابٍ} {فَوَاكِهُ}

{لِّلآكِلِيِنَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 19
19. By means of this water, Allah has also produced gardens in which grow date palms and vines and every other kind of fruit for men to eat and enjoy.
{وَشَجَرَةً تَخْرُجُ مِن طُورِ سَيْنَآءَ تَنبُتُ بِٱلدُّهْنِ وَصِبْغٍ لِّلآكِلِيِنَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 20
20. And by means of this water, Allah Almighty in His glory caused an olive tree to grow on Mount Sinai where He spoke to Moses. This olive tree is blessed, and from it comes olive oil, a thick oil good for seasoning food. (Ahmad reported that the prophet said: “Eat oil and use it as a salve, for it comes from a blessed tree.”)
{وَإِنَّ لَكُمْ فِي ٱلأَنْعَامِ لَعِبْرَةً نُّسْقِيكُمْ مِّمَّا فِي بُطُونِهَا وَلَكُمْ فيِهَا مَنَافِعُ كَثِيرَةٌ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ}
{ٱلأَنْعَامِ} {مَنَافِعُ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 21
21. Allah Almighty describes the varied usefulness of animals – camels, cows, sheep, and goats, – for we can drink their milk and eat their meat and clothe ourselves with their wool and fur, and ride on camels, which can also carry our burdens. Allah has made, of His creation of these animals, a lesson for mankind and a proof of His great power, for the blood which has its origin in food transforms itself in the mammary glands into pleasant-tasting and nourishing milk.
{وَعَلَيْهَا وَعَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 22
22. People can also use animals as well as boats for transportation, and they carry their loads from place to place and from one country to another.
{وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحاً إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ فَقَالَ يٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ أَفَلاَ تَتَّقُونَ}
{يٰقَوْمِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 23
23. Almighty Allah sent Noah (peace be upon him) to his people to encourage them to worship Allah, and to prevent His punishment and His revenge on those who ascribed associates to Him and disobeyed Him and treated His messengers as liars. Thus Noah said to them: “O my people, worship Allah alone, without any associate. For you, there is no other Allah but Him. Are you not afraid of His punishment? Because if you were afraid of His punishment you would refrain from worshipping any god other than Him.”
{فَقَالَ ٱلْمَلأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن قَوْمِهِ مَا هَـٰذَا إِلاَّ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَن يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَوْ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لأَنزَلَ مَلاَئِكَةً مَّا سَمِعْنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِيۤ آبَآئِنَا ٱلأَوَّلِينَ}
{ٱلْمَلأُ} {مَلاَئِكَةً} {ۤ آبَآئِنَا}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 24
24. Then the leaders from his people said: “This Noah is a man, like us; he wants to be superior over us by claiming to be a prophet. How is it that he receives revelations which are denied to us, whereas he is just a man, as we are, and is not superior to us in any way? If Allah had wished to communicate with us, He would have sent an angel down to us, and not a man. But we have never heard even our most ancient ancestors say that Allah had already sent men as His messengers, to urge us, like Noah, to worship Allah alone.
{إِنْ هُوَ إِلاَّ رَجُلٌ بِهِ جِنَّةٌ فَتَرَبَّصُواْ بِهِ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 25
25. “Yes, he is but a madman when he claims that Allah has sent him to us and has bestowed him a revelation which is denied to us. We should be patient and wait for a little while until he dies and then we can rest.” (The significance of this speech is said to be: “Be patient! Perhaps he will be embarrassed by our treatment of him, and will voluntarily return to the religion of his ancestors.”)
{قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرْنِي بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 26
26. For a long time, Noah (peace be upon him) sought to persuade them, both secretly and publicly, but they persisted in not believing him and in denigrating him, until he could see that there was no hope for them, so he appealed to Allah to help him against them. He therefore invoked his Lord: “I am overcome! Defend Your cause!” (See chapter 54- Al-Qamar (The Moon), 10). That is why Allah Almighty says here: “Noah appealed to his Lord to help him against his people, who were treating him as a liar.”
{فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ أَنِ ٱصْنَعِ ٱلْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَوَحْيِنَا فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا وَفَارَ ٱلتَّنُّورُ فَٱسْلُكْ فِيهَا مِن كُلٍّ زَوْجَيْنِ ٱثْنَيْنِ وَأَهْلَكَ إِلاَّ مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَوْلُ مِنْهُمْ وَلاَ تُخَاطِبْنِي فِي ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوۤاْ إِنَّهُمْ مُّغْرَقُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 27
27. “When Noah asked Us for help against his people, We told him to build the ark, under Our eyes and Our protection against any aggressors, after having instructed him as to how to construct it. For when Our command comes to eradicate and punish your people, water will gush from everywhere until it reaches as high as the oven – the site of the fire – which will then be boiling. Take your family into the ark, your children and their wives, except for two of them I have already condemned to death with everyone else, do not bring them; and take also into the ark every kind of animal, one pair of each, so that the seeds of life may survive, after the death of all the creatures in the flood.” Allah ordered Noah not to take pity on the unbelievers in his family or his people, and told him that He had condemned them to death by drowning because they had disbelieved in Him and had prevaricated; Noah should therefore not expect any of them to be saved.
{فَإِذَا ٱسْتَوَيْتَ أَنتَ وَمَن مَّعَكَ عَلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ فَقُلِ ٱلْحَمْدُ للَّهِ ٱلَّذِي نَجَّانَا مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ}
{نَجَّانَا} {ٱلظَّالِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 28
28. When you have completed your preparations and are safely in the ark, you and all those with you, then say: “All praise be to Allah, who has saved us from the unbelievers!”
{وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِي مُنزَلاً مُّبَارَكاً وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 29
29. And if you are saved from drowning, and have emerged from the ark, say: “Lord, bless my disembarkation, and may my days thereafter be blessed, and grant me safety, You, the best of saviours.”
{إِنَّ فِي ذٰلِكَ لآيَاتٍ وَإِن كُنَّا لَمُبْتَلِينَ}
{لآيَاتٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 30
30. That is what We have already done to the people of Noah, as a punishment, because they treated Our messenger as a liar and spurned Our signs and denied our uniqueness and worshipped idols; let it be a lesson for your people, O Mohammad, and an argument in Our favour against them, from which they can deduce what Our laws are regarding people like them. Perhaps they will abandon their disbelief and their straying and their lying cries and their obstinacy. We reminded them of Our signs to see how they will react before We inflict punishment on them.
{ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِن بَعْدِهِمْ قَرْناً آخَرِينَ}
{آخَرِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 31
31. And then, after the people of Noah, Allah created other generations who succeeded him on earth – it is said that they were the people of Aad who succeeded the people of Noah. In chapter 7- Al-A’raf (The Heights), 69, Hud said to his people as he warned them and urged them to worship Allah: “Remember, then, when after the people of Noah, He designated you as Noah’s successors.”
{فَأَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِمْ رَسُولاً مِّنْهُمْ أَنِ ٱعْبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُمْ مِّنْ إِلَـٰهٍ غَيْرُهُ أَفَلاَ تَتَّقُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 32
32. Allah Almighty sent to them a Messenger, Hud (peace be upon him), chosen from among them, who urged them to worship Allah Alone, without any associate, and said to them: “Worship Allah, and obey Him, without ascribing any associates to Him, for worship is due to Allah alone. Do you not fear His punishment if you worship idols and refrain from worshipping Him alone without any associates .”
{وَقَالَ ٱلْمَلأُ مِن قَوْمِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَكَذَّبُواْ بِلِقَآءِ ٱلآخِرَةِ وَأَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ فِي ٱلْحَيـاةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا مَا هَـٰذَا إِلاَّ بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَيَشْرَبُ مِمَّا تَشْرَبُونَ}
{ٱلآخِرَةِ} {وَأَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ} {ٱلْحَيـاةِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 33
33. But the haughty dignitaries among his people, who disbelieved in their Lord and treated the Day of Resurrection as a lie, said to the oppressed among his people: “He who claims that Allah has sent him to you, is nothing more than a man like you, eating what you eat, and drinking what you drink. How could a man be a messenger from Allah?
{وَلَئِنْ أَطَعْتُمْ بَشَراً مِّثْلَكُمْ إِنَّكُمْ إِذاً لَّخَاسِرُونَ}
{وَلَئِنْ} {لَّخَاسِرُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 34
34. “And if you believe in a man like yourselves, and you obey him and you worship the deity he tells you to worship, then certainly you will be the losers, for there is no use whatsoever in obeying him.”
{أَيَعِدُكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ إِذَا مِتُّمْ وَكُنتُمْ تُرَاباً وَعِظاماً أَنَّكُمْ مُّخْرَجُونَ}
{وَعِظاماً}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 35
35. The dignitaries said mockingly to the oppressed: “Does this false pretender really promise you that when you are dead, and are no more than dust and bones, you will be taken out of your graves? How can that be?”
{هَيْهَاتَ هَيْهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 36
36. “What he promises you about resurrection and assembly after death is far off, much further off than he imagines.
{إِنْ هِيَ إِلاَّ حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 37
37. “There is no other life than this present one: we die and we live, and after us other generations will live and then die, for death is the end of everything, not resurrection and resuscitation and judgement.”
{إِنْ هُوَ إِلاَّ رَجُلٌ ٱفتَرَىٰ عَلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ كَذِباً وَمَا نَحْنُ لَهُ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 38
38. Those who treated their messenger as a liar said that he had fabricated a lie against Allah by claiming to be His messenger, that this was only a lie; they did not believe at all in what he said in connection with his message about the resurrection and the life after death. They did not believe him and would not follow him.
{قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنْصُرْنِي بِمَا كَذَّبُونِ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 39
39. When the messenger had despaired of their faith, after they had said, “And we are certainly not going to put faith in him!” he appealed to his Lord, asking for help against those who treated him as a liar and begging Him to take revenge on them.
{قَالَ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ لَّيُصْبِحُنَّ نَادِمِينَ}
{نَادِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 40
40. Then Allah heard his prayer and told him that in a short while his people would be overcome with regret when they were punished for having disbelieved and treated Allah’s messenger as a liar.
{فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ غُثَآءً فَبُعْداً لِّلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 41
41. The cry of punishment came upon them and they deserved it because of their disbelief and their prevarication. They were destroyed and became useless, with no benefit to be derived from them, like the scum of a flood. In that lay humiliation and scorn towards them, and what awaits them on Judgement Day will be even worse than what they endured during their life on earth. In all this there is a lesson to be drawn by the generations which come after them.
{ثُمَّ أَنشَأْنَا مِن بَعْدِهِمْ قُرُوناً آخَرِينَ}
{آخَرِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 42
42. When Allah had destroyed the people of Aad, other generations succeeded them, such as Thamoud the people of Saleh, the people of al-Aikah, who were the people of Shua’yb, and the people of Lot.
{مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ}
{يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 43
43. No community can evade or postpone the date that Allah has set for its destruction, since for everything there is a prescribed term which nobody can go beyond.
{ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا تَتْرَا كُلَّ مَا جَآءَ أُمَّةً رَّسُولُهَا كَذَّبُوهُ فَأَتْبَعْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ بَعْضاً وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ أَحَادِيثَ فَبُعْداً لِّقَوْمٍ لاَّ يُؤْمِنُونَ}
{تَتْرَى} {وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ} {كُلَّ مَا}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 44
44. After the destruction of these people, Allah created other generations, and sent to each a messenger in order to urge them to worship Allah, and to communicate His message to them. Allah sent His messengers successively, one after the other, but every time a messenger came to a community the dignitaries and leaders treated him as an impostor, so Allah annihilated them as He had the others who preceded them and consigned them to legend. Allah withdraws His compassion from those people who do not believe in Him or His messengers.
{ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَأَخَاهُ هَارُونَ بِآيَاتِنَا وَسُلْطَانٍ مُّبِينٍ}
{هَارُونَ} {بِآيَاتِنَا} {وَسُلْطَانٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 45
45. Then Allah sent the messengers whose names are given in the preceding verses, like Moses and Aaron, with solid arguments and decisive proof.
{إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَئِهِ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُواْ وَكَانُواْ قَوْماً عَالِينَ}
{وَمَلَئِهِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 46
46. Allah Almighty sent Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them) to Pharaoh and his high council, but they were far too proud to follow them and believe in them and what they brought from Allah, such as believing in one sole Allah and ceasing to torment the children of Israel (as is mentioned in verse 47 in chapter 20- Ta-Ha), for they were a haughty nation who constantly prevaricated and oppressed the people.
{فَقَالُوۤاْ أَنُؤْمِنُ لِبَشَرَيْنِ مِثْلِنَا وَقَوْمُهُمَا لَنَا عَابِدُونَ}
{عَابِدُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 47
47. Pharaoh and his high council therefore said: “Are we to believe in two mortals just like ourselves, while their people, the children of Israel, are in Egypt humbly serving us as slaves, obeying us and worshipping Pharaoh?” (According to Pharaoh, this was a reason for despising Moses and Aaron and not believing in them.)
{فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَكَانُواْ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْلَكِينَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 48
48. Then Pharaoh and his people treated Moses and Aaron as impostors. Allah destroyed them by drowning them all at the same time, with His absolute power.
{وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ ٱلْكِتَابَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَهْتَدُونَ}
{آتَيْنَا} {ٱلْكِتَابَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 49
49. Allah Almighty gave Moses the Torah, in which He set out His precepts and His orders and His prohibitions, so that the children of Israel might be guided by the truth it contained and so that they might act according to its laws.
{وَجَعَلْنَا ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَأُمَّهُ آيَةً وَآوَيْنَاهُمَآ إِلَىٰ رَبْوَةٍ ذَاتِ قَرَارٍ وَمَعِينٍ}
{آيَةً} {وَآوَيْنَاهُمَآ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 50
50. Allah Almighty designated Jesus and his mother Mary as signs to mankind and a decisive proof of His great power. He brought Jesus to birth without a father, contrary to the laws of nature, and gave him the power to talk when he was still in his cradle, and by his hand healed the blind and the leprous. Also, with Allah’s permission, Jesus raised the dead. And to Jesus and his mother Allah granted refuge on a tranquil hill, blessed with vegetation and water from a spring.
{يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلرُّسُلُ كُلُواْ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبَاتِ وَٱعْمَلُواْ صَالِحاً إِنِّي بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ}
{يٰأَيُّهَا} {ٱلطَّيِّبَاتِ} {صَالِحاً}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 51
51. Allah Almighty ordered His messengers to eat pure and permitted foods, and to be sure of thanking Allah for His gifts, which shows that acting obediently leads one to act well. And the messengers always ate what they had earned with their own hands. Allah told them that He was always aware of what they were doing, for nothing could be hidden from Him; at the same time, the messengers obeyed Allah’s commands, and united good words with good deeds.
{وَإِنَّ هَـٰذِهِ أُمَّتُكُمْ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً وَأَنَاْ رَبُّكُمْ فَٱتَّقُونِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 52
52. “Your religion, O prophets, is one, and your community is one, and your religion is the invitation to worship Allah alone, without any associate.” Then Allah tells them that He is their Lord and that they should worship Him alone and not associate any other divinity with Him, and that they should truly fear Him.
{فَتَقَطَّعُوۤاْ أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ زُبُراً كُلُّ حِزْبٍ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 53
53. The messengers were one community and preached the same worship, but after them people split into various different and rival sects, which had nothing in common; each sect thought that it was following the true path, whereas in fact it exulted in what separated it from that path. (The meaning of this is as follows: They have cut matters into pieces and each has carried away what he has torn off with his hands, content to think of nothing but his own fragment.)
{فَذَرْهُمْ فِي غَمْرَتِهِمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 54
54. O Mohammad, after having accomplished your mission and communicated your message to mankind, leave the unbelievers in their ignorance and their separation, content and preoccupied until their fate surprises them when the time comes for the final gathering.
{أَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُمْ بِهِ مِن مَّالٍ وَبَنِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 55
55. Do they imagine, these arrogant people, that what we grant them in the way of property and sons comes to them because they deserve to be honoured and treated with respect? Oh no; we plunge them in this way deeper and deeper into disobedience so that they exceed the prescribed limits and sin more and more.
{نُسَارِعُ لَهُمْ فِي ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ بَل لاَّ يَشْعُرُونَ}
{ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 56
56. Do such people imagine that We grant them that to honour them and because they hold an important place in our esteem? Or that Our favours of wealth and children are an indication that good things will be precipitated to them and that they will be preferred over others to receive gifts and blessings? No, things are not as they like to suppose. We want to test them and to tempt them, and they are unaware of the terrible end which awaits them and of the misery that hangs over them. (A Hadith, reported by Ahmad, says: “Allah shared out morality among you just as he shared out property. Allah grants the pleasures of this earth to those He loves and to those He does not love, but He grants religion only to those He loves, for Allah loves those to whom He grants religion. And I swear, by the name of Him who has the soul of Mohammad in His hands, that no man will be sound and whole unless his words and his heart are sound and whole, nor will he be a believer until his neighbour is safe from his evil deeds.”)
{إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ خَشْيةِ رَبِّهِمْ مُّشْفِقُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 57
57. Believers are those who despite their merits and their faith and their good works are anxious in their fear of their Lord, apprehensive lest He delude them.
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِآيَاتِ رَبَّهِمْ يُؤْمِنُونَ}
{بِآيَاتِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 58
58. Believers are those who have faith in the signs of their Lord which are found everywhere in the universe, in their souls and on the horizons. Also, they believe in the signs which Allah has sent through His messengers, with not the slightest doubt, just as they believe that everything in the universe is there by the order and will of Allah.
{وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِرَبِّهِمْ لاَ يُشْرِكُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 59
59. And believers are those who worship Allah alone and ascribe no associate to Him and who leave Him purified of any associate or companion or son.
{وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَآ آتَواْ وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ}
{آتَواْ} {رَاجِعُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 60
60. They carry out their responsibilities and duties and perform good deeds beyond those which are obligatory, while their hearts fear Allah. And they esteem that they do not obey Allah sufficiently, or commensurately with all His gifts, and they fear that their obedience might not be accepted because they have failed to carry out Allah’s instructions adequately, for they know that they will have to face their Lord who will judge them together with everyone else for all their acts.
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ}
{أُوْلَـٰئِكَ} {يُسَارِعُونَ} {ٱلْخَيْرَاتِ} {سَابِقُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 61
61. And believers are those who cooperate in good works, who have a deep desire to please their Lord, and hasten to obey Him before they die, and they are eager in this life to perform good deeds; and it is through such deeds that they will achieve victory.
{وَلاَ نُكَلِّفُ نَفْساً إِلاَّ وُسْعَهَا وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَابٌ يَنطِقُ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ}
{كِتَابٌ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 62
62. Islam gives the believer a vigilance which does not surpass his capacity, for Almighty Allah imposes on the believer only what he is capable of doing. On the Day of Resurrection, He will judge men according to their acts which have been recorded in the Book of Prescriptions, without neglecting anything, great or small; all is weighed, so that nobody is injured. No good deed is diminished and no evil deed is augmented.
{بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِّن دُونِ ذٰلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ}
{أَعْمَالٌ} {عَامِلُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 63
63. The hearts of the polytheists are blind to the guidance of the Quran and its precepts, which will provide happiness in this world and hereafter. If they have read the Quran and have understood it, they will find that this Book tells the truth, and that the works of man, however slight, are reckoned and he will be judged accordingly, and Allah will injure none of His creatures. But those disbelievers have committed even worse sins; they were mired in disbelief and in their sins, and they treated the Quran as lies and magic, as they did also the messenger of Allah whom they treated as a madman who had learned the Quran from the people of the Book. (A Hadith, reported by Ibn Mas’ud the Prophet (peace be upon him said: ‘By Him other than whom there is no god, one of you will do the deeds of those who go to paradise so that there will be only a cubit between him and it, then what is decreed will overcome him so that he will do the deeds of those who go to hell and will enter it;)
{حَتَّىٰ إِذَآ أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِمْ بِٱلْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْأَرُونَ}
{يَجْأَرُون}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 64
64. Then, when the punishment of Allah and His torments and His revenge descend on even the most wealthy of them, they will cry out in anguish and beg for deliverance, so horribly will they suffer.
{لاَ تَجْأَرُواْ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنَّكُمْ مِّنَّا لاَ تُنصَرُونَ}
{تَجْأَرُواْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 65
65. The Lord Almighty will respond to them by saying: “Do not cry out today! No, nobody will save you from Us! It does not matter whether you cry out or remain silent, for no one will come to protect you from Allah; the deed is done, and punishment is your lot.”
{قَدْ كَانَتْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰ أَعْقَابِكُمْ تَنكِصُونَ}
{آيَاتِي} {أَعْقَابِكُمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 66
66. Allah’s verses were recited to you, you cannot deny it, and you turned on your heels, and swollen with pride you mocked the Book, and it is for that reason that today you have no excuse.
{مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِراً تَهْجُرُونَ}
{سَامِراً}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 67
67. And, swollen with pride because of your position with regard to the Kaaba (the polytheists of Makkah had the Kaaba, the House of Allah in their midst), you refused to believe, and said: “We are the people of the house of Allah, and its servants; let nobody rank himself higher than us, for we fear nobody.” Meanwhile, around the house of Allah, like storytellers in the evening, you exchanged indecent remarks about the Quran.” (It has been said that the phrase “indecent remarks” here refers to treating Allah’s messenger as a liar, but the primary meaning is more accurate.)
{أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُواْ ٱلْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَآءَهُمْ مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ آبَآءَهُمُ ٱلأَوَّلِينَ}
{آبَآءَهُمُ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 68
68. Allah Almighty deplores the unbelievers and condemns them because they have neither understood nor meditated upon the Quran, which is expressed in the most literary and eloquent language, whereas they had the time to meditate upon it and to discover that it contains Allah’s truth and is free of all contradiction and filled with morality, laws, and wisdom. Perhaps they believed that no messenger had come to their ancestors, but why should they reject the idea that a messenger would come to them? But they knew that the messengers came in succession, and that they were gifted with miracles. That is what should urge them to believe this Messenger who has brought them the Quran, and who certainly came down on Allah’s behalf.
{أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُواْ رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُ مُنكِرُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 69
69. Did they not recognize their Messenger, Mohammad (peace be upon him), before he was sent to them, and did they not recognize his morality, his honesty, and his frankness, so that they have no reason to doubt what he has now delivered to them? Indeed, before he became Allah’s messenger, they knew him as a man gifted with all good qualities, and he was known among them by the name, “the honest one”; also, Abou Soufian ben Harb, who was an unbeliever, testified before the Roman king Hercules that Mohammad (peace be upon him),was honest. Why then should they doubt his message?
{أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِ جِنَّةٌ بَلْ جَآءَهُمْ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَارِهُونَ}
{كَارِهُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 70
70. Why did they say: “There are jinns in him, so he does not know what he is saying?” And yet they know that he was the wisest of men, the most balanced and the most perspicacious, and indeed, what Mohammad (peace be upon him), has brought to them is not a lie, but the truth sent from Allah, an invitation to monotheism and an indication of Allah’s law for His servants, which can lead mankind to happiness; but the majority of them were predisposed to aberration and deviation from the truth, which had infected their hearts, like shadows, doubts, polytheism, and excessive sinning; and it is for that reason that they did not understand the truth but despised it.
{وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَن ذِكْرِهِمْ مُّعْرِضُونَ}
{ٱلسَّمَاوَاتُ} {أَتَيْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 71
71. If the Quran had coincided with their beliefs and endorsed polytheism, and had stated that Allah Almighty had a son, and embellished sin and incited the people to evil deeds, then the equilibrium of the universe would be destroyed, the heavens and the earth and everything in them would fall into disorder:
– If oppression and injustice were permitted, then the affairs of human groups would be in disarray.
– If the strong were permitted to crush the weak, neither security nor order could be established.
– If it were permissible to commit adultery, lineages would be confused, the father would not know his own child, and children would be cast out into the streets, like stray animals cared for by no one.
So Allah Almighty tells them that He has brought them the Quran, of which they should be proud, but they have rejected it, and treated it as an amusement and a game.
{أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ خَرْجاً فَخَرَاجُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّازِقِينَ}
{تَسْأَلُهُمْ} {ٱلرَّازِقِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 72
72. Or do they claim that you have imposed on them some form of restitution for your communication of the message, and it is for that reason that they refuse to believe? In truth, you asked them for no tribute, nor any restitution, for what Allah has granted you in this life, and the happiness He has promised you in the next, are far better for you, than to earn some salary from them,.because everything you do is for the love of Allah
{وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ}
{صِرَاطٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 73
73. Yes, O Mohammad, you call them to a religion of goodness and sure guidance, towards the true path which will lead them to the Paradise of their Lord.
{وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلآخِرَةِ عَنِ ٱلصِّرَاطِ لَنَاكِبُونَ}
{بِٱلآخِرَةِ} {ٱلصِّرَاطِ} {لَنَاكِبُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 74
74. Yes, and those who do not believe in the afterlife and in resurrection after death are misleaders who do not care about the path which leads to Allah’s Paradise.
{وَلَوْ رَحِمْنَاهُمْ وَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِمْ مِّن ضُرٍّ لَّلَجُّواْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ}
{رَحِمْنَاهُمْ} {طُغْيَانِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 75
75. Almighty Allah talks of the bitterness of the polytheists, in their disbelief and their obstinacy, and says that even if He had shown compassion towards them and had cleared them of the misery that was upon them and had led them to understand the Quran, they would not be led to Him, and they would persist in their disbelief and their obstinacy and their rebellion; so Allah Almighty says: “And if Allah had known of some good in them, He would have made sure that they listened; but, even if He made them listen, they would remain indifferent and would turn their backs on Him!” (See chapter 8- Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War), 23). (The meaning here is said to be as follows: if they return from the afterlife to life here on earth, they will return to commit forbidden acts.)

Ibn Abbas said: “Everything which contains ‘if’ (law) describes what will never be.”
{وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِٱلْعَذَابِ فَمَا ٱسْتَكَانُواْ لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ}
{أَخَذْنَاهُمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 76
76. Almighty Allah says that He tested them with misfortunes and difficulties (for example, the death of their fighters at the battle of Badr, and other blows of this kind that they suffered), but that did not draw them back towards their Lord, and did not cause them to return from their errors and their oppression and their disbelief, and they have not returned to Allah, to ask His pardon. (A Hadith related by the Sahihain says that the Prophet (peace be upon him),made vows against the people of Quraish when they resisted him, and said: “O Lord, help me against them with the seven things, like Joseph’s seven!” – that is, the seven lean years. Ibn Abbas says that Abou Soufian came to see the Prophet when things were going badly for him, and said to him: “O Mohammad, I seek your assistance in the name of Allah and by the ties of blood between us, for we have eaten the hair and the blood.”) Then Allah Almighty sent down this verse.
{حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَاباً ذَا عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ إِذَا هُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 77
77. Then, when Allah’s decree reaches them, and their hour is come, the punishment of Allah shall seize them; they will be in despair when what they least expected happens to them, and there will be no hope for them.
{وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِيۤ أَنْشَأَ لَكُمُ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلأَبْصَارَ وَٱلأَفْئِدَةَ قَلِيلاً مَّا تَشْكُرُونَ}
{ٱلأَبْصَارَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 78
78. And it is Allah who provided you with hearing so that you could hear voices, with eyesight with which to see things, and intelligence to understand and meditate on Allah’s signs and His arguments, both in souls and on the horizons, which proves His uniqueness and His power. After having listed the gifts granted to man, Almighty Allah shows that men still persist in their disbelief. He says: “How ungrateful you are to Allah.”
{وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِي ذَرَأَكُمْ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 79
79. And it is Allah Almighty who created men and spread them throughout the earth and made them all His representatives, and He will gather them all together on a certain day to judge them according to everything that they have done during their earthly life.
{وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِي يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَلَهُ ٱخْتِلاَفُ ٱللَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ أَفَلاَ تَعْقِلُونَ}
{ٱخْتِلاَفُ} {ٱللَّيْلِ} {يُحْيِي}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 80
80. And it is He who gives them life by breathing a soul into them, then after giving them life he gives them death, and later he will re-create them once again, on the Day of Resurrection, and He will assemble them before Him for the Last Judgement. And it is He who ordained the night and the day and made them succeed each other, and He made them different in length, the one becoming long when the other becomes shorter, and vice versa. “And you, mankind, you see all that. Have you not brains enough to meditate and conclude that the world did not happen by chance or in vain, and that Allah created it through His power and has ordered and organized it and put it under His control, so that men can discover the proofs of the existence of their all- powerful Creator, sole Allah, without associate?”
{بَلْ قَالُواْ مِثْلَ مَا قَالَ ٱلأَوَّلُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 81
81. But no, these unbelievers among the Arabs draw no lessons from the signs of Allah, and do not understand His arguments that prove His power of accomplishing whatever He wishes, such as the re-creation of mankind on the Day of Resurrection, when He will call forth the dead from their graves and assemble them all for the Last Judgement. But they say what their ancestors said and those former generations who treated Allah’s messengers and His arguments as lies.
{قَالُوۤاْ أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَاباً وَعِظَاماً أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ}
{أَإِذَا} {وَعِظَاماً} {أَإِنَّا}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 82
82. Those among former generations who refused to believe, saying it was all a lie, said: “What? When we are dead and are nothing but dust and bones, will we be revived and live again just like before?”
{لَقَدْ وُعِدْنَا نَحْنُ وَآبَآؤُنَا هَـٰذَا مِن قَبْلُ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلاَّ أَسَاطِيرُ ٱلأَوَّلِينَ}
{وَآبَآؤُنَا} {أَسَاطِيرُ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 83
83. And they said that we had been promised resuscitation on the Day of Resurrection, as was promised to our ancestors before us, but it had never happened and was just an old legend.
{قُل لِّمَنِ ٱلأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 84
84. The Arab unbelievers had a confused faith; they did not deny the existence of Allah, nor that He was, according to them, the Master of the heavens and the earth, and the governor over them, but together with Him they worshipped other divinities, and they said: “If we worship them, it is only to bring us nearer to Allah.” And they imagined the angels to be the daughters of Allah. That is why in this verse Allah takes the incontestable beliefs that they held and says to His noble Prophet: “Ask them, ‘To whom do the earth and all her inhabitants belong, if you know?’”
{سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ قُلْ أَفَلاَ تَذَكَّرُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 85
85. They would say that its master, its creator, and its governor is Almighty Allah; however, they did not remember this truth when they worshipped gods other than Him.
{قُلْ مَن رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ ٱلسَّبْعِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ}
{ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 86
86. “And ask them, ‘Who created the seven skies and whatever is in them, and who is the Lord on the high throne?’” Ibn Abbas says: “No one can imagine the throne except for Almighty Allah.”
{سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ قُلْ أَفَلاَ تَتَّقُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 87
87. They were going to say: “Everything in existence belongs to Allah, who is the Lord.” And they had no other answer. So say to them: “If you recognize that he is the Master of the skies and the Lord of the high throne, well then! Why do you not act according to your belief? Do you not fear Him and are you not afraid of His punishment when you worship other associates along with Him, and you deny that He has the power to re-create you once again and to resuscitate you and judge you in a life after death?”
{قُلْ مَن بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُوَ يُجْيِرُ وَلاَ يُجَارُ عَلَيْهِ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 88
88. Ask them: “In whose hands is the highest majesty over all? And who dominates over everything and is the Most High? And who can, through His power and His strength, give sanctuary to any of His creatures that He wishes? And who is on a level that nobody else can attain? And against whom is no protection possible? If you know the answer, then tell me.”
{سَيَقُولُونَ لِلَّهِ قُلْ فَأَنَّىٰ تُسْحَرُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 89
89. They confessed: “The Great Master, who gives sanctuary but whom no other sanctuary can withstand, is Allah alone, without associate.” Then ask them: “Why do you not reflect, and why do you deceive yourselves and distance yourselves from the truth, straying towards the false and worshipping other divinities than Allah, whereas you know that He is the sole Lord? Are you bewitched and have you lost your reason?”
{بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ}
{أَتَيْنَاهُمْ} {لَكَاذِبُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 90
90. That is not what the unbelievers say, nor is it what they claim when they say that what their messenger brought them was nothing but old legends, and that he was not sent down by Allah, but the truth is that Mohammad (peace be upon him), was honest and it was Allah who ordered him to communicate his message to mankind and to invite them to follow him, whereas it was they who were the liars, in what they said and claimed, and in worshipping idols and statues.
{مَا ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِن وَلَدٍ وَمَا كَانَ مَعَهُ مِنْ إِلَـهٍ إِذاً لَّذَهَبَ كُلُّ إِلَـٰهٍ بِمَا خَلَقَ وَلَعَلاَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ}
{سُبْحَانَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 91
91. Almighty Allah purifies Himself from having a son or an associate in sovereignty, government and worship, and He says: “If there were more than one Allah, then each deity would demand the submission of all the others and their successors, and each deity would try to assert his dominance, and would try to climb over the others! Allah is more noble than the way He is described by the unbelievers, who ascribe to Him associates and a son.
{عَالِمِ ٱلْغَيْبِ وَٱلشَّهَادَةِ فَتَعَالَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ}
{عَالِمِ} {وَٱلشَّهَادَةِ} {فَتَعَالَىٰ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 92
92. He knows what is visible or invisible for men. He does not stoop to concern Himself when the unjust and the ungrateful ascribe to Him a son or a partner!
{قُل رَّبِّ إِمَّا تُرِيَنِّي مَا يُوعَدُونَ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 93
93. Almighty Allah orders His honourable Messenger to address Him with this prayer when people trouble him: “If ever You punish them, O Lord, during my lifetime ..
{رَبِّ فَلاَ تَجْعَلْنِي فِي ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ}
{ٱلظَّالِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 94
94. “.. I pray You, O my Lord, not to number me amongst the unjust and not to let me perish with them.” The Messenger prayed, saying: “If ever you wish to tempt a people, then let me die so that I shall not be tempted.” (Reported by Ahmad and Al-Turmuzy.)
{وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰ أَن نُّرِيَكَ مَا نَعِدُهُمْ لَقَادِرُونَ}
{لَقَادِرُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 95
95. If We wished to, We would show you what punishment and misery We will visit upon them, for We are capable of that, but We will postpone it until the right time comes. (Allah Almighty showed His noble messenger something of his punishments in the way He treated the people of Quraish at the battle of Badr.)
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 96
96. Reject evil with something which is more beautiful, and repulse a bad deed by one that is good, pardoning and overlooking their ignorance, tolerating their misdeeds and their accusation of lying. We know very well how they describe Us, and blaspheme by telling lies about Us and about you, and We will make them pay dearly for what they say; so do not be sad.
{وَقُلْ رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ ٱلشَّياطِينِ}
{هَمَزَاتِ} {ٱلشَّياطِينِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 97
97. And seek Allah’s protection against the temptation of the demons, their whisperings and their incitements, because they will never cease, and they are not guided by charity. The Prophet is invulnerable, they can do nothing against him but Allah commands him to say this to increase his protection and to teach his community to seek Allah’s protection against the demons’ murmurings at every moment.
{وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 98
98. And say: “I seek Your protection, Lord, against their approaches to me, and I seek Your protection against their temptations and whisperings.” It is possible that the request for Allah’s protection comes at the hour of death. The Messenger (peace be upon him) sought Allah’s protection against the presence of the devil when he was engaged in any kind of enterprise, and in particular at prayer times and when he was reading the Quran and at the hour of his death.
{حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَآءَ أَحَدَهُمُ ٱلْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ٱرْجِعُونِ}
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 99
99. The unbeliever constantly acts badly, not caring what sins he commits, until death comes to him, and he discovers what punishment awaits him; then he regrets his past and the ways in which he failed Allah, and says: “My Lord! send me back to earth that I may do good, and correct the ways in which I failed You in my worship and failed Your servants.”
{لَعَلِّيۤ أَعْمَلُ صَالِحاً فِيمَا تَرَكْتُ كَلاَّ إِنَّهَا كَلِمَةٌ هُوَ قَآئِلُهَا وَمِن وَرَآئِهِمْ بَرْزَخٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ}
{صَالِحاً} {قَآئِلُهَا} {وَرَآئِهِمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 100
100. The unbeliever begs his Lord to allow him to return to his life here on earth so that he can do good, and correct the ways in which he failed, and remedy his neglect of family and financial obligations. But Almighty Allah reprovingly answers, “No.” He will not accede to such requests. For the request the unbeliever makes is without substance; every unjust person says such things when he is in trouble or distress. If he is sent back, he will merely repeat what he did before, for, earlier, during his lifetime, the signs were shown to him but he did not derive any lessons from them, and he did not act righteously. Thus a barrier is placed behind them (al-barzakh), which prevents them from returning to life here below, and they will stay there until the day when they will be resuscitated. (Some commentators say that al barzakh is the period which the dead spend in their graves, from their death until the Day of Resurrection.)
{فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَلاَ أَنسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلاَ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ}
{يَوْمَئِذٍ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 101
101. Then when the trumpet sounds the summons to resurrection, then men will rise from their graves, and family ties will no longer hold, and nobody will ask for news of anyone else, for each of them on that day will be in a situation which occupies him utterly.
{فَمَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ}
{مَوَازِينُهُ} {فأُوْلَـٰئِكَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 102
102. Deeds are Allah’s means of evaluation. They will be weighed in the balance, so that those whose good deeds are more weighty than their evil deeds will be among the blessed who will be saved from hell and received into paradise.
{وَمَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ فأُوْلَـٰئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوۤاْ أَنفُسَهُمْ فِي جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدُونَ}
{مَوَازِينُهُ} {فأُوْلَـٰئِكَ} {خَالِدُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 103
103. Those, however, whose evil deeds are more weighty than their good deeds, will be lost, and will dwell forever in hell.
{تَلْفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَهُمْ فِيهَا كَالِحُونَ}
{كَالِحُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 104
104. The fire will burn their faces, and their mouths will gape, and their features will be transformed.
{أَلَمْ تَكُنْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنْتُمْ بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ}
{آيَاتِي}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 105
105. And while they are being reprimanded and condemned for the sins they committed during their lifetime, the people of hell will be told what has brought them to the fires of hell: “Messengers were sent to you, and Books were delivered to you, so there was no justification for any doubt or argument which might keep you from the true path, but you treated Allah’s signs as lies.”
{قَالُواْ رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا وَكُنَّا قَوْماً ضَآلِّينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 106
106. They answer, saying: “O Lord! our sins which have caused us to be damned, have prevailed over us, and we have no argument to present, but we had wandered too far astray to be able to follow You, so we wandered far from the path of righteousness.”
{رَبَّنَآ أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْهَا فَإِنْ عُدْنَا فَإِنَّا ظَالِمُونَ}
{ظَالِمُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 107
107. Then they say to their Lord: “Lord, release us from hell and return us to life on earth, and if we regress and repeat the sins what we committed beforehand, then we shall indeed be prevaricators and will deserve Your punishment.”
{قَالَ ٱخْسَئُواْ فِيهَا وَلاَ تُكَلِّمُونِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 108
108. When the unbelievers beg Him to release them from hell and to send them back to life here below, Almighty Allah replies with these words: “Remain there, humiliated and scorned, and sink deeper in, and speak no more to Me of this, for there is no return to life on earth.”
{إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِي يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ آمَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا وَٱرْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ}
{آمَنَّا} {ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 109
109. Then Allah Almighty reminds such people of the sins they committed during their life here below and their mockery of the believers and their friends: “Yes, there was a group of my servants who believed in Me and My messengers, and who said, ‘Lord, we believe in You and Your messengers; forgive us therefore and have mercy upon us, for You are all-compassionate.’
{فَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُمْ سِخْرِيّاً حَتَّىٰ أَنسَوْكُمْ ذِكْرِي وَكُنْتُمْ مِّنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 110
110. “You treated them with mockery, to the point of neglecting to glorify Me; and you had no fear of My punishment, but on the contrary, laughed and made fun of it.
{إِنِّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ ٱلْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوۤاْ أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ}
{ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 111
111. “And I have rewarded them this day for the most admirable of their actions, in having endured with constancy your mockery and your malice, and I have endowed the winners with happiness, paradise, and freedom from hell.”
{قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ}
{قَالَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 112
112. Almighty Allah shows that if they had spent their short life here below in obedience to Allah, in worshipping Him alone, without associate, and in endurance, they would have gained what the faithful and the pious have gained. Allah asks them: “How long have you dwelt upon the earth, in numbers of years?”
{قَالُواْ لَبِثْنَا يَوْماً أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَسْئَلِ ٱلْعَآدِّينَ}
{فَسْئَلِ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 113
113. They will answer: “We dwelt on earth for one day or part of a day. Ask, O Allah, the angels who know of the works of Your servants, and count them.”
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 114
114. So Allah will say to them: “In any case, you dwelt there only a little while; if you had been aware, you would not have preferred the ephemeral to the eternal, and you would not have acted badly, which drew down the anger of Allah during that short period; if you had striven to worship and obey Him, as the believers have done, then you would have won rewards as they have done.”
{أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ عَبَثاً وَأَنَّكُمْ إِلَيْنَا لاَ تُرْجَعُونَ}
{خَلَقْنَاكُمْ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 115
115. O evil-doers, did you imagine that I created you only for frivolous reasons, and without a goal, and that there was no reason for creating you? I did not create you frivolously, but so that you would worship Allah and obey His orders. Do you think that you will not be led before Me, on the Day of Resurrection, so that you can be judged? (It is also said that the meaning of this verse is: Do you believe that you were created so that you could play and amuse yourself like animals, and that there would be no reward or punishment?)
{فَتَعَالَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ لاَ إِلَـٰهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱلْكَرِيمِ}
{فَتَعَالَى}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 116
116. But Allah is the most high, and His name is too exalted and too sanctified for Him to have created a thing frivolously, for He is truly the King of all! There is no other Allah but Him, the Lord of all things, and the Master of the throne (the throne is the roof over all creatures). He governs and controls everything in existence. And He is noble. (It is said that the epithet “noble” in this verse refers to the throne, meaning that it is marvellous and beautiful.)
Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 117
117. Almighty Allah threatens those who have worshipped deities other than Him, saying: “Whoever invokes another deity besides Allah, without having proof or argument to support such an act, Allah will condemn him and justly make him pay for it. No, the unbelievers will not find happiness and will not save themselves from punishment.”
{وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ وَٱرْحَمْ وَأنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ}
{ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ}

Surah Al-Muminun: Verse 118
118. Then Allah Almighty instructs His messenger and all believers to address Him with this prayer: “Lord, grant pardon (that is to say, wipe out my fault and hide it from people), and have mercy (that is to say, support me and grant me success in all that I say and do), since You, my Lord, are all-forgiving and all- merciful.”
