In the Name of Almighty Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate

Surah Al-Jinn is the 72nd chapter of the Quran, containing 28 verses. Revealed in Makkah, it takes its name from a group of jinn who overheard the Prophet reciting the Quran and were so moved that they returned to their people declaring belief in it and affirming that Allah has no partner, wife or son. The surah describes the varied natures found among the jinn, some righteous and some not, affirms that Allah alone has knowledge of the unseen, and that the Messenger’s sole duty is to convey what he has been sent with. Below you can read the full Surah Al-Jinn in Arabic with a clear English translation and a verse-by-verse tafsir (explanation of the meaning) from Aysar al-Tafaseer, with the option to jump to any specific verse.

Tafsir of the Verses

{ قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ ٱسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَقَالُوۤاْ إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآناً عَجَباً }
{ قُرْآناً }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 1
1. Tell your people, O Mohammad, that Allah has revealed to you that a company of Jinn had heard the Quran being recited and had believed in it. They told each other: “We have heard a wonderful, strange recital. (Most interpreters agree that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) knew that the jinn were listening to him as he recited the Quran, but that he did not see or feel them close to him.)
{ يَهْدِيۤ إِلَى ٱلرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ وَلَن نُّشرِكَ بِرَبِّنَآ أَحَداً }
{ فَآمَنَّا }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 2
2. “This Quran guides to the truth and to the straight path. We believed in it and we will not revert to worshipping other gods with our Lord as we did.”
{ وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَلاَ وَلَداً }
{ تَعَالَىٰ } { صَاحِبَةً }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 3
3. They purified their great Lord of having a wife, companion or child. For a companion is taken because of the need for her and she is of the same species as her husband; and a child is taken for companionship and because of the need for him in old age and in times of difficulty as well as to continue the family line. But Allah Almighty is purified of all that. Nothing is like Him, He needs neither ally nor assistant. He exists forever.
{ وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ شَطَطاً }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 4
4. The ignorant among the jinn, however, spoke false words about Allah, very much removed from reality, and they attributed to Him a wife and a child. (According to Mujahid, Akramah and Qutadah the jinn were referring to Satan when they used the word “foolish” in this verse.)
{ وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن تَقُولَ ٱلإِنسُ وَٱلْجِنُّ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِباً }
Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 5
5. (The believing jinn said:) “We thought that no man or jinn would tell lies about Allah Almighty by attributing a wife or child to Him. Therefore, we believed what the foolish said. But when we heard the Quran recited, we knew that what they said about Allah was false.”
{ وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ ٱلإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ ٱلْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقاً }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 6
6. Certain men among mankind would take refuge while in the desert with men among the jinn. This increased the impudence and tyranny of the jinn who would then mislead men until they sought refuge with them. (In the Jahiliya, or the pre-Islamic period, the Arabs would seek refuge with the leader of the jinn of that area when they struck up their tents in the desert lest they be harmed by them. Thus, when the jinn saw that men feared them and took refuge with them, they grew more tyrannical and foolish, and more intrepid toward man).
{ وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّواْ كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَداً }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 7
7. And the jinn believed just as you, O men, believed, that Allah would not send any messenger to call them to believe in Allah Alone, and not to associate partners with Him, to believe in the messengers and in the Last Judgement. (Or that Allah would raise no one from his grave to call him to account for his deeds.)
{ وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ فَوَجَدْنَاهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَساً شَدِيداً وَشُهُباً }
{ فَوَجَدْنَاهَا }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 8
8. Allah Almighty says that when He sent Mohammad (peace be upon him) as messenger, and revealed the Quran to him, He preserved the Quran from the jinn. He filled the heaven with stern guards to protect it on all sides. The devils were expelled from their seats so that they would not eavesdrop on any part of the Quran recited. Allah Almighty says that the jinn said: “We inquired into the news of the heavens, as we usually do, and found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires, guarding it on all sides lest we eavesdrop.
{ وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ فَمَن يَسْتَمِعِ ٱلآنَ يَجِدْ لَهُ شِهَاباً رَّصَداً }
{ مَقَاعِدَ }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 9
9. “We would sit before that on seats in heaven, which was then free from guards and flames, to steal a hearing, but we were expelled lest we hear any news in the heavens concerning the Quran, and give it away to the fortune-tellers. But he who listens now will find a flaming fire awaiting to kill him on the spot.” (Ibn Abbas said: “The devils had seats in the sky where they listened to the Revelation. When they heard one word, they would add nine words to it. The first word would be true, but the added words were all false. Thus when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was sent to carry the message, their seats were forbidden to them. They mentioned this to Satan. The stars were not used for throwing flames before that time and Satan said to them that this happening was due to an incident on earth. He sent his guards to investigate, and they found the Messenger of Allah standing in prayers between the two hills in Makkah. They came back and related this to Satan, and he said: ‘This is the incident that occurred on earth.’”)
{ وَأَنَّا لاَ نَدْرِيۤ أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَن فِي ٱلأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَداً }
Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 10
10. We do not know what it is that happened in heaven. Was it evil that Allah intended to inflict on the inhabitants of the earth, or did Allah intend by it good and guidance?
{ وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلصَّالِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَلِكَ كُنَّا طَرَآئِقَ قِدَداً }
{ ٱلصَّالِحُونَ } { طَرَآئِقَ }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 11
11. Among us are the righteous and the pious who obey Allah, while others are different from us. We were different sects, beliefs and groups; among us were the believers, the depraved and the unbelievers.
{ وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّآ أَن لَّن نُّعْجِزَ ٱللَّهَ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ وَلَن نُّعْجِزَهُ هَرَباً }
Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 12
12. We know for sure that Allah’s power rules us, and we cannot escape from Him no matter how hard we try. He is Omnipotent and none can incapacitate Him.
{ وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا ٱلْهُدَىٰ آمَنَّا بِهِ فَمَن يُؤْمِن بِرَبِّهِ فَلاَ يَخَافُ بَخْساً وَلاَ رَهَقاً }
{ آمَنَّا }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 13

Whoever believes in Allah and what He revealed to His messengers should not fear a decrease of his good deeds, nor any injustice done to him due to the sins of others.
{ وَأَنَّا مِنَّا ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا ٱلْقَاسِطُونَ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ تَحَرَّوْاْ رَشَداً }
{ ٱلْقَاسِطُونَ } { فَأُوْلَـٰئِكَ }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 14

{ وَأَمَّا ٱلْقَاسِطُونَ فَكَانُواْ لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَباً }
{ ٱلْقَاسِطُونَ }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 15
15. Whereas he who turns away from the teachings of submission (Islam) will be fuel for Hellfire just like the unbelievers among mankind.
{ وَأَلَّوِ ٱسْتَقَامُواْ عَلَى ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ لأَسْقَيْنَاهُم مَّآءً غَدَقاً }
{ وَأَلَّوِ } { ٱسْتَقَامُواْ } { لأَسْقَيْنَاهُم }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 16
16. If the polytheists of Quraish had chosen the path of belief in Allah and obedience to Him, He would have provided much for them in life on earth, and given them rain in abundance. (Ibn Abbas said: “This verse was revealed when the unbelievers of Quraish suffered a dearth of rain for seven years.”)
{ لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَاباً صَعَداً }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 17
17. Thus, He could try them by granting them ample sustenance and sending them rain in abundance to see whether they would thank their Lord for His grant or they would disbelieve. If they thanked Him for His blessings, Allah would grant them full reward, but if they disbelieved, He would give them respite, then seize them with such punishment that comes only from One exalted in power. And he who turns away from the Quran and all its exhortations, Allah Almighty will admit him to an intolerable, everlasting torment where he will find not a moment of rest.
{ وَأَنَّ ٱلْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلاَ تَدْعُواْ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَداً }
{ ٱلْمَسَاجِدَ }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 21
21. Tell the polytheists Quraish who turned down your advice to them: “It is not in my power to repel from you any harm or bring you any benefit . The power belongs to Allah Almighty. To Him belongs everything, and He Alone is capable of everything.”
{ قُلْ إِنِّي لَن يُجِيرَنِي مِنَ ٱللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَداً }

{ بَلاَغاً } { رِسَالاَتِهِ } { خَالِدِينَ }

{ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا رَأَوْاْ مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِراً وَأَقَلُّ عَدَداً }
Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 24
24. They continue to consider the believers weak and to mock them. But when they see the punishment which they were promised, they will then know who are the weak. Are they the true believers in Allah Alone, or the polytheists who have no protector?

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 26

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 27
27. except to the messenger with whom He is well-pleased and has therefore chosen to acquaint him with the unseen; then He will do so. He makes guardian angels march before the messengers and behind them to protect them from the whispering of Satan until they communicate what Allah has revealed to them. These angels protect them from the harm and injury caused to them by men as well.
{ لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُواْ رِسَالاَتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَداً }
{ رِسَالاَتِ }

Surah Al-Jinn: Verse 28

None of His creatures, whether angels or others, share this knowledge with Him.
