Why was the Ayah mentioning a mosquito revealed?

لماذا نزلت الآية التي تذكر "البعوضة" في سورة البقرة؟

The verse was revealed in response to the hypocrites and skeptics who questioned the Quranic parables. They mocked the mention of small creatures like flies and spiders: claiming that Allah is too exalted to set examples with such weak beings. Allah revealed this verse to affirm that truth and wisdom can be found in any of His creations: regardless of their size.
نزلت هذه الآية رداً على المنافقين والمشككين الذين استهزؤوا بالأمثال القرآنية؛ حيث تساءلوا عن الحكمة من ذكر مخلوقات صغيرة كالذباب والعنكبوت: زاعمين أن شأن الله أرفع من أن يضرب مثلاً بهذه الكائنات الضعيفة. فأنزل الله الآية ليؤكد أن الحق والحكمة يتجليان في أصغر خلقه كما في أعظمه.

In the Holy Quran: Allah uses parables to clarify truths and test the faith of the believers. When earlier verses mentioned the spider or the fly: the hypocrites tried to use these examples to cast doubt on the divine origin of the message. This verse clarifies that Allah is not ashamed of any of His creations. To the believer: every parable is a sign of truth: while for those with diseased hearts: it becomes a means of further confusion.

يستخدم الله تعالى الأمثال في القرآن الكريم لتوضيح الحقائق واختبار إيمان العباد. وحين نزلت آيات تذكر العنكبوت أو الذباب: حاول المنافقون استغلال ذلك للتشكيك في مصدر الوحي. جاءت هذه الآية لتبين أن الله لا يمنعه كبرياؤه من ضرب الأمثال بأي شيء خلقه؛ فالمؤمن يرى في هذه الأمثال حقاً ويقيناً: أما الذين في قلوبهم مرض فيتخذونها وسيلة للضلال والجدال العقيم.

(Indeed: Allah is not ashamed to set forth a parable even of a mosquito or what is above it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve: they say: "What did Allah intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient.)

(۞ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي أَن يَضْرِبَ مَثَلًا مَّا بَعُوضَةً فَمَا فَوْقَهَا ۚ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فَيَقُولُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۘ يُضِلُّ بِهِ كَثِيرًا وَيَهْدِي بِهِ كَثِيرًا ۚ وَمَا يُضِلُّ بِهِ إِلَّا الْفَاسِقِينَ)

[سورة البقرة: آية ٢٦]

Scholarly Insight: Scholars of Tafsir note that the phrase "what is above it" (fa ma fawqaha) can refer to something even smaller than a mosquito in terms of significance: or something larger in size. This linguistic depth shows that size is irrelevant in divine wisdom. Scientific observation today reveals the mosquito to be an incredibly complex biological marvel: confirming that Allah's choice of this example in the Holy Quran was indeed a sign for those who reflect.
