Who is Qaroun (Korah)?
Living during the era of Prophet Musa, Qaroun possessed treasures so vast that even the keys to his storehouses were a heavy burden for a group of strong men. His downfall began when he claimed his success came solely from his own knowledge, ignoring the advice of his people to remain humble and seek the reward of the Hereafter.
(Indeed, Korah was from the people of Moses, but he behaved arrogantly towards them. We had granted him such treasures that even their keys would burden a group of strong men. Some of his people advised him, "Do not be prideful! Surely Allah does not like the prideful.")
(Rather, seek the reward of the Hereafter by means of what Allah has granted you, without forgetting your share of this world. And be good to others as Allah has been good to you. Do not seek to spread corruption in the land, for Allah certainly does not like the corruptors.)
(He replied, "I have been given all this only because of my knowledge." Did he not know that Allah had already destroyed many generations before him who were far mightier and greater in wealth?)
Scholarly Insight: The Quranic narrative of Qaroun serves as a universal warning against self-delusion caused by wealth. His refusal to acknowledge the Divine source of his success is the core of "Tughyan" (transgression), teaching believers that every blessing is a test of humility and stewardship.
