When we are faced with a calamity, what does Allah ask us to do?
1. The Declaration of Istirja |
To say: "Surely to Allah we belong and to Him we will all return"
(We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure - who, when faced with a disaster, say, "Surely to Allah we belong and to Him we will all return.") [2:155-156]
2. Seeking Help Through Prayer |
Prayers are always calming. Knowing that you are standing in the presence of Allah Almighty, one forgets all the worries and sadness in the world.
- (And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is a burden except for the humble) [2:45]
- (So glorify the praises of your Lord and be one of those who always pray,) [15:97-98]
Scholarly Insight: The act of saying "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" is more than just words; it is a profound realization that we are owned by the Creator and our ultimate destination is back to Him. This perspective shifts the focus from the pain of the loss to the eternal mercy of Allah, which is why the Prophet (PBUH) taught that whoever says this at the time of calamity will be rewarded and compensated with something better.
