The reason is that he killed a man from the Copts, and the matter was not revealed. However, once the news spread, Moses left Egypt, fearing that the chiefs of Pharaoh’s people would kill him.
Below are the details:
- Moses reached the age of maturity after being raised in the palace of Pharaoh, as Allah the Almighty decreed. Once, at the time when people took their naps, he was walking in the roads of the city of Manph where he lived.
- Moses saw injustice practiced against someone before him; a Coptic man was fighting with a man from the Children of Israel, so the Israelite asked Moses to save him from the brutality of the Coptic, so Moses, peace be upon him, struck him his hand, and the man died.
- The people knew that a man had been killed, but they did not know who the killer was, and so the killer remained anonymous. However, Moses, peace be upon him, was afraid that the matter would be unveiled. Another incident occurred causing the disclosure of the matter.
- One day, while Moses, peace be upon him, was walking in the city, the Israelite who asked for Moses’ help the first time, sought Moses’s help again, crying out loudly for help. Therefore, Moses came to him to save him. Yet, Moses saw that the man was fighting with others repeatedly, which meant that he was a troublemaker, causing the fight with other people. Moses said to the Israelite, “Indeed, you are clearly a trouble-maker.”, meaning he was morally and religiously corrupt.
- At that moment, the Israelite thought that Moses wanted to hit him and not his Coptic enemy, so the Israelite said out of fearing Moses’ oppression against him, “O Moses! Do you intend to kill me as you killed a man yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land.” He meant that Moses intended to hit and kill others as he wished without fearing the punishment for that, and that he did not want to be one of those who reconcile between the fighting parties.
- The Copt heard what his Israelite fighter said to Moses, peace be upon him, and he conveyed the news to the Pharaonic palace. The men of the palace gathered under the leadership of Pharaoh to discuss the case, so they decided to kill Moses.
- Allah the Almighty brought to Moses a man telling him what the people had plotted against him, and that they had imposed a death sentence on him. When the news reached Moses, peace be upon him, he left Egypt, for fear of being killed. He was waiting for things to settle, so that he may survive. He made Du’a to his Lord, Exalted and Sublime be He, by saying: “My Lord! Save me from the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers)!”, including Pharaoh and the like.
(˹One day˺ he entered the city unnoticed by its people. There he found two men fighting: one of his own people, and the other of his enemies. The man from his people called to him for help against his foe. So Moses punched him, causing his death. Moses cried, “This is from Satan’s handiwork. He is certainly a sworn, misleading enemy.) (Al-Qasas 28:15)
(And so Moses became fearful, watching out in the city, when suddenly the one who sought his help the day before cried out to him again for help. Moses rebuked him, “Indeed, you are clearly a trouble-maker.”) (Al-Qasas 28:18)
(Then when Moses was about to lay his hands on their foe, the enemy said, “O Moses! Do you intend to kill me as you killed a man yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land. You do not intend to make peace!”) (Al-Qasas 28:19)
(And there came a man, rushing from the farthest end of the city. He said, “O Moses! The chiefs are actually conspiring against you to put you to death, so leave ˹the city˺. I really advise you ˹to do so˺.”) (Al-Qasas 28:20)
