Ayoub’s reputation for patience is not only a description handed down by later scholars; it is stated directly by Allah in the Quran itself, “We truly found him patient.” Scholars point to the directness of this praise, coming from Allah rather than from people around him, as part of why his name became the standard reference point for patience in Islamic tradition.

سمعة أيوب بالصبر ليست مجرد وصف توارثه العلماء لاحقا؛ بل يذكره الله نفسه مباشرة في القرآن الكريم: “إنا وجدناه صابرا”. ويشير العلماء إلى مباشرة هذا الثناء، الصادر من الله لا من الناس حوله، جزءا من سبب أن اسمه أصبح المرجع القياسي للصبر في التراث الإسلامي.

The verse does not stop at calling him patient; it adds two further descriptions, an excellent servant, and one who constantly turns back to Allah. Commentators read these together as showing his patience was not passive endurance alone, but was joined with an active, ongoing return to Allah throughout his trial.

لا تتوقف الآية عند وصفه بالصبر؛ بل تضيف وصفين آخرين، نعم العبد، وأنه أواب. ويقرأ المفسرون هذين الوصفين معا دليلا على أن صبره لم يكن تحملا سلبيا وحده، بل اقترن برجوع فعّال ومستمر إلى الله طوال ابتلائه.

This verse is drawn from near the end of Ayoub’s ordeal, the moment concerning an oath about his wife, yet it is used here to characterize him in general. Scholars treat this as fitting precisely because it comes after prolonged illness and loss, so praise for his patience delivered at this late point carries the weight of everything that preceded it.

استُمدت هذه الآية من قرب نهاية محنة أيوب، اللحظة المتعلقة بيمين بشأن زوجته، ومع ذلك تُستخدم هنا لوصفه بشكل عام. ويرى العلماء أن هذا مناسب تحديدا لأنه يأتي بعد مرض وفقد طويلين، فالثناء على صبره في هذه المرحلة المتأخرة يحمل ثقل كل ما سبقه.
